My goal is to help keep the Earth habitable for all these people that the other WCG projects, and a number of other BOINC projects, are trying to save. (The general feeling seems to be that adding to the existing Earth population is a good thing.) What projects would you suggest I contribute to? The other 5 WCG projects, along with projects like Rosetta, SIMAP, and Lattice, are all about increasing future contention for the Earth's finite resources. CEP and CPDN are pretty much the only projects on BOINC that are at all concerned with preserving our planet, for all those extra people, in a habitable state. Absolutely! Your words could have just as easily come out of my mouth. This is precisely why I'm more excited about CEP than any of the other projects. I hate it when I see boinc being used for solving silly puzzles and complex but pointless math problems that haven't been solved since they were thought of 200 years ago... What a waste of computing power and electricity! Curing cancer is all well and good, but what happens when all the non-cancerous humans die in wars fought over petrolium? That's why CEP is unique and more worthwhile than other projects. |

What projects would you suggest I contribute to? Ibercivis has some sub-projects relating to nuclear fusion research. In my view that's another form of clean energy. |

ps: Passed 10 years run time yesterday ![]() 10 years CEP or... ![]() Tomorrow I get to a TOTAL of 10 years crunching, 9 Teraflops (6.3M points or 1M credits) and 10,000 WU crunched. No Harreld, you are the master at CEP right now (as far as we know). From the active forum members, yes. But I can't imagine that there is nobody with more and that there is such a big gap between astrolab and Dieter and me... Where are all the others??? ![]() |

I looked into it. Unfortunately, as near as I can tell, the fusion project is one of the only ones in Ibercivis that is not mac compatible. It seems like boinc projects fall into 4 main categories: 1) cure diseases, feed people, otherwise increase human population 2) general physics/molecular research, probably leading back to 1, or to profitable inventions for some company in the future. 3) solving obscure mathematical or chess puzzles that only mathematicians and chess geeks care about (what a waste this is! IMO) 4) helping us not destroy our planet, or at least figure out how fast we are destroyig it. ( CEP CPDN are about the only ones in this category ) Again, I'm not saying that it's bad to cure diseases, but maybe we should think about having a habitable planet for all these disease free people. is it possible that curing diseases is just more profitable? |

SETI doesn't seem to fit into any of those categories.
Now, I'm not against SETI - but I think we should put humanity first. |

Ah, seti@home!
----------------------------------------Seti is interesting. My feelings regarding it are quite mixed. I think that it is highly unlikely that we are alone. I strongly suspect that there is intelligent life out there. And yet... It's hard to make an argument for seti@home being real science. And thus far it has produced exactly nothing. Yet it has the potential, if it ever finds anything, to be absolutely transformational for our societies. Absolutely the most important single event in all of recorded human history. It sucks up *way* more than its fair share of BOINC resources, thanks to excellent handling of publicity, getting frequent mentions on Nova, etc. despite the fact that thus far it has been nothing more than a well marketed spook hunt. It's more aggressive in soliciting monetary donations than any other BOINC project. Constantly whines that it doesn't have enough money. And sports the most rude, obnoxious, and arrogant user community in all of BOINCdom. The fact that it already gets more processor resources than the next 5 most popular BOINC projects put together (counting WCG as *one* project!) finally made me decide to give it a pass. Seti's already burning up enough watts in this world. Other projects are more deserving of processor time. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 7, 2009 8:58:36 PM] |

I have not looked at Virtual Prairie. But you touch on something else that has been on my mind. What is the best and easiest way to evaluate a BOINC project for actual scientific value? On one end of the spectrum in the BOINC world, we have CPDN, an Oxford university project, which involves reputable climatologists and has a good reputation in the scientific community. Then we have projects like hydrogen@home, which so far as I can tell is two guys, neither of which with educational backgrounds one would expect for someone working in the field of hydrogen fuel, who are looking to use the power of BOINC to help jump start their new company. I'm not exactly claiming that they are fly-by-night. But I do have concerns as to whether processor cycles devoted to that project are likely ever to do any good beyond perhaps helping these guys launch their commercial company. So far as I know, in the greater BOINC community. all you have to do to launch a project is set up your servers and advertise.
----------------------------------------I'm not that familiar with just how the evaluation process for potential WCG projects works, but I have noticed that WCG does have a scientific advisory board. Could someone who is more familiar with the evaluation process and criteria for WCG projects elaborate a bit upon those things? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 8, 2009 5:10:22 PM] |
