ps: Passed 10 years run time yesterday 10 years CEP or... If it's 10 years CEP I'm going to quit this project! I'd never make it to gold... For those that don't realise I don't really expect to be quitting CEP - I honestly can't see anyone having 10 years of crunching done already. ... Waits to be proved wrong ... |

No one is getting cranky. I asked a simple question that I have not seen an answer to. As I stated, I was just curious. I'm happily crunching away on other projects and fine with it. That "Don't know who "we" is" comment just didn't seem to have a place for a innocent question.

And so we wait patiently for more CEP, while I put the time to good use in my hunt for the golden DDDT badge One week to go for that one...

As a relatively objective observer, it seems to me that Knightro2 politely asked a very valid question and was met with a startling amount of defensiveness. Of course, the accuracy of the science is far more important... on a completely different plane in fact, than "credits" and "badges". But as the recipients of such a valuable gift in computing power from the participants, it does seem that it would be beneficial for all if the project team would provide a little more status detail as to what is going on with the generation of new and better work units.
CEP stands apart from other projects on the WCG in that while the other projects are about keeping more people alive, CEP is about helping to keep the Earth in such a condition that people would want to be alive on it. Thus it is completely understandable that one might be particularly concerned about its status. Personally, I wish people in WCG, and the greater BOINC community, would talk a lot less about credit and badges, and a lot more about the science and its potential effects on the World. |

Hi, sbergman27.
The researchers are expected to provide regular updates. The researchers are at liberty to decide how and when they provide updates, but ideally World Community Grid want them to provide updates here in the forum once a month. The Clean Energy Project have met this requirement better than any other project I can recall. Their latest update was a mere 10 days ago. They have provided updates in December, January and February, in addition to answering about 10 technical questions related to the project asked here by members. |

The Clean Energy Project have met this requirement better than any other project I can recall. Hello Didactylos, Without wanting to make this an extended discussion, which might become counterproductive, my general feeling about BOINC science projects is that the more everyone can be treated as an integral part of the team, the better, regardless of any official policies or official expectations. Some projects do very well at this. (CPDN comes to mind.) Some not so well. I have even noted one BOINC project community, which shall remain nameless, in which those who only contribute processor time to the project without making monetary donations are sometimes called "freeloaders" by other members of the community, who happen to have made monetary donations. The messages I try to deliver are that: 1) what we are participating in is, ideally, not a competitive sport, but the pursuit of good science and consequent benefits to the human condition and human knowledge. 2) Each one of us is part of a larger team, and that on any team, close communication between members of various functional groups is a Good Thing. -Steve |

sbergman27 makes some very valid points. I am new to WCG and BOINC in general. I am willing to give my processor time to projects that I believe in. I am surprised at the number of BOINC projects there are that offer such minimal information about the projects. As a cruncher, I want to be part of a team, I want to know my time and effort is going to a good cause and that it is appreciated. The more information I get about the project and how the results are going, the more interested I will be in contributing.
I came across WCG and CEP in particular caught my eye. I thought, this is a project I want to contribute to. I have to admit I find it a little frustrating that there is no work available for me, and I keep coming back to these forums to see if there is any indication of when the situation might change. I don't care about badges or stats, I just want to contribute. I think for all BOINC projects, the openness of the researches is essential to get the backing of the crunchers to carry out the work for them. I hope the CEP guys can give us some indication or people will get bored of this project and focus on other ones not realising that this one is back up. |
