Re: t'Re: Tribalwar

Evidently the following posts constitute an attempt to start a "flame war". I am reposting it in its entirety here, because certain questions have been raised about TribalWar.com (and certain misinformation) that I feel is important to have preserved somewhere, and the team thread seems like a good place to do this.

Team --

After all of the drama of recent days, I thought it would be refreshing to members of our team to read a post in one of the several threads now being maintained by Tribalwar (it must be confusing and time consuming for them to try to keep up with three threads here and the several hundred on their own website). In his post at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...thread=2096&offset=55, Tribalwar team member Brasstax recalls earlier halcyon days among the members of the gaming community that had banded together to form what is now Tribalwar. It was very interesting to note that Tribalwar originally was known of as MyOnlineBoard, so we may have more in common with many of their team than we think. Of their 540 currently active WCG members, we have only heard from a very small number, and we should remember that they were a strong, polite and quietly growing team here in the WCG before recent events. Brasstax ended his post with
Now GOGOGGOGOGOGOGO fold some proteins!

Which is not too different from a closing we often use
Happy Crunching!

Sir --

I do not share what you construe to be a "good sense of humor" but I at least do have manners which you seem to be without.

You do not have my best

Do you have two accounts? That was just posted under the name "Lewis Carroll" before being switched back to your name.

And, hey -- which one of us is without a sense of manners? I wish you my best. :) As someone who has seen the TribalWar.com forums grow larger and more successful every year, and who has been a positive, contributing member of several other large (and better-policed) forums in the past, such as the Through The Looking Glass community forums, all I can say -- and this was echoed recently in a post on these forums by a TribalWar administrator -- is that certain administrators on this forum take an enormous amount of offense at very inconsequential matters. It takes an ounce of humor to take these posts in the manner in which they are intended, but in each case you refuse to take them in good humor and insist on trying to start flame wars by responding angrily! laughing

This case is open-and-shut. You were had, by Brasstax -- you took seriously a post where he said that Tribalwar.com was based on Dungeons and Dragons and real-life role-playing, with admins running through the forest shouting "lightning bolt lightning bolt -- sleep!"

It doesn't matter who you are, what your sense of humor is, or how strictly you interpret the rules -- two things will always be true about that scenario:

1) It's hilarious, and The People Must Be Told.
2) When you've been had in so spectacular a fashion, the onus is upon you to take it in good humor!

updated:

I am editing this post, because I wish to drive home the point that *I* am quite respectful of the rules, and do everything I can to keep the discussion from devolving. :P As such, I'm even respecting the rather rudely stated request that I not post further in this thread, and am instead editing a post to defend myself.

I am seeing accusations of "abuse", that I am posting "bilge" . . . re-read the post above. Read it again. Then, read it again, until you understand it.

You were had! It's fine. It happens to the best of us -- for instance, we've all probably had the experience of laughing at a joke that we didn't really get, just because everyone else was laughing. Hey, that kind of thing happens. Lord knows no one is holding it against you. :D

But when it is pointed out, and you fly off the handle . . . that turns an ordinary gaffe into something that you handled very poorly.

This is black and white.

It's not a matter of having a "special kind" of sense of humor, or a "warped" kind of a sense of humor. His humorous gaffe was not my invention, and it was a doozy! As Brasstax himself stated:
Hahaha. That's too funny. I never figured anyone would take that drivel I posted seriously.

For reference, here is the original post, with some key points highlighted:
I would just like to say that I am one of the older and more responsible members of TribalWar. Some of these kids are way out of control. I remember back in the early 90's when TribalWar was mostly run by old hippies. Those were the days, There was hardly any bickering. Everyone believed in a computing utopia made up of congenial individuals all working together towards a common goal.

It is only recently that a non-work safe, non-family friendly element started to creep in. This coincided with the release of a game called Tribes. Personally, I think that was the downfall of tribalWar. From it's roots in DnD and live RPGs where the admins were regularly seen running around in the woods yelling "fireball" and "sleep, sleep" tribalwar has fallen to the current situation where an admin cannot be found. If one is found, he is likely to smell of ammonia and refuse.

So, please take with a grain of salt the attitude of some of the younger members. They don't remember when TW was called MyOnlineBoard. They don't remember the hours spent hacking together Z80s pulled from dumpsters behind Radio Shacks to piece together the first iteration of TW.

If there are any kids reading this, please remember to listen to adults. We know best. Eat your vegtables and do something nice for your mom and dad. Pick up your rooms between proteins. I want all of you to raise your grades before the project is over. Remember, the future is like a pearl inside of a big oytser and it is up to you to crawl in that large barnacle filled with fish smelling fluid and pull out that mother of a pearl.

Really, only then can you be happy in the knowledge that you are wanted in today's society.

Now GOGOGGOGOGOGOGO fold some proteins!

Given that post, somebody took seriously the statement that Tribalwar used to be called "MyOnlineBoard".

laughing That qualifies as funny in any book of funny that there is. If you think it's not funny, I'd like you to explain why. Really -- I posted the quote from the admin who took it seriously in IRC, and the responses were nothing but laughter. Because it's funny!

But, more importantly for this thread: it's non-offensive. It's not a flame. In point of fact, it's NOT MY FAULT. I didn't even take any action here -- I pointed out that someone had been had, and that is all. :)

As I've stated several times before -- I wish you all my best, and I understand where you're coming from. We've all been there! laughing But it's better to sheepishly laugh along with the group when you do something silly, instead of getting angry.

Thanks for ruining a really great thing. May your mothers be ever so proud of you all.

We worked our arses off trying to get support from the general public for this project.

And then you lot turned up and rampaged around the forums likening us to neo nazi's and baal worshippers.

Cheers

Excellent Job applause applause applause applause applause

Just a little while until the stats come in, and it may not hold for today, but -- we've had greater than 10k PER DAY increases in our daily numbers for 7 days straight, and brought additional life (AND a lot of carefully created, inoffensive, high-quality NEW CONTENT -- the posters on the previous page) to forums that were a half-step away from dead. We are bringing more interest to the project, and doing so with humor and with a VERY positive attitude (look at the humor you see in this thread!)

If you can not share this positive attitude I would appreciate it if you would not try to hijack this thread and bring it down with your attitude of general negativity.

However, I understand that our sense of humor as expressed in this thread -- while I believe it to be *well* within the rules of this forum, and a beneficial influence -- is not something that everyone will appreciate equally. Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled!

All of my best,
-Luc

HEY!

Watch the sweeping generalizations, please. mr_luc has been heavily criticized on TribalWar for this behavior. Do not assume all Tribalwar members are the same because of bad experiences with individuals.

Re: t'Re: Tribalwar

Sorry piotrr

I'm sorry for tarring you all with the same brush. If you could feedback to the other members of your team who feel the same way that would be appreciated.

Thanks for your support.

Regards

Dave

piotrr is heavily criticized on tribalwar for everything he does. Generally, unfairly -- he married someone who is 3 times his age, and no one will ever let him forget it, which is manifestly unfair. However, he is far outside the mainstream, even for TribalWar.
