Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

This is a capitalist society... the right assumption is that IBM and the likes will eventually turn this into profit. I am doing it just to test the processing capabilities of my dual-proc laptop.

so far so good. -- by the way, it looks like yahoo allowed for their messenger icons to be used freely too ...

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

Well said, James!

I think people come here for one of two reasons:

> the technology gain

> the project gain

If one does not believe in one or both, then don't participate. Do something else that pleases your soul.

It is an interesting discussion though. <dataman>

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

The WCG docs use the word "Philanthropy" which dict.org defines as appended below. I'm confidant that WCG's intentions are good and open, and I will recheck this on a regular basis. My client stays up for now.

2 definitions found for philanthropy

From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) :

Philanthropy \Phi*lan"thro*py\, n. [L. philanthropia, Gr. ?: cf.
F. philanthropie.]
Love to mankind; benevolence toward the whole human family;
universal good will; desire and readiness to do good to all
men; -- opposed to misanthropy. --Jer. Taylor.

From WordNet (r) 2.0 :

philanthropy
n : voluntary promotion of human welfare [syn: philanthropic
gift]

Re: All results will be in the public domain...

I posted the following question to the WCG head office
"------------------------------------------------------------
Problem Overview

Problem Type: Question
Description: There is no clear indication on the WCG web page that the data
produced by the GRID will be available in the public domain. A concise
statement on the home page to this effect would allay the fears of many
that our spare CPU power is going for the good of all."

and received the following answer

"This is a philanthropic project. The direct results of work done by the
World Community Grid will be in the public domain. For more information go
to our Request for Proposals
(http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/request_for_proposals.html)
page and download the "RFP Download Link". We are adding a FAQ on this."

Re: All results will be in the public domain...

Hi all,

yes it makes it much clearer, but unfortunatly I'm still not satisfied !

It is written in rfp.pdf :

10. Following the conclusion of the project, the research organization will make results
produced by World Community Grid freely available to other research organizations within
Page 5 of 5 Request For Proposal Version RFP 2004-03 Nov
six months. The research organization also will provide results in a lay version for the
World Community Grid community of volunteers and interested visitors to the web site.

1. Who will define which research organization has the right to get the results ? "Bad guys", how ever they may have got this label, will not get the information or how will this decison be made ?

2. Why can't everybody have full access to the results ? Publish it on the internet ! That's inexpensive and will allow everybody to have access.

3. Who ensures that nobody can misuse the system and "plays" complex, strategic scenarios of a nuclear war or similar bad things on it ? This shouldn't be only under national control !

Please don't misunderstand me ! I really love this idea and think it's one of the greatest ideas someone ever had, but all these computers togethercanalso be a really migthy weapon and it should be very well controlled !

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

You know, after sifting through all the documentation (IANAL) and articles and such, there are only two issues that I still have with this:
1. To put it bluntly, I really don't care what IBM and Grid.org's intentions are with this program. Stalin thought he had good intentions. What matters to me is in practice what are the results? It seems so far that the intentions of the WCG is to have the results left in public domain but they leave that to the client. Please note: there is no timeframe that specifies when said client must release the information. Not only that but if said client does patent the end result, do you really think that the WCG is going to fight, for instance, Pfizer and their attys when they claim that the results of this research data is critical in their findings and are thus wrapped into the patent? Look how wild the USPO has been lately with new patents and tell me I am wrong.
2. "World Community Grid, with technology and funding provided by the IBM Corporation, is making grid technology available to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid." Not to keep picking on them, but folks realize that Pfizer IS a "public" company.
