Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

From the document that solicits researchers to use the grid ....

World Community Grid is designed as a resource for research done with a philanthropic or humanitarian purpose and will only be available to projects conducted for public and not-for-profit purposes... Results must be made available to the global research community by the sponsoring research organization and remain in the public domain. The results will also be available on World Community Grid’s website for volunteers and other visitors.

I'm not sure how it could be much more clear than that:
1). They will only allow it to be used by Non-Profit Organizations
2.) All results must remain in the public domain

I think it sounds like a wonderful opportunity to contribute to something that has the ability to advance science that can help humanity. What more could I ask for. I certainly plan to leave my client running. smile

I am not savvy in english legal language, so I just done this: I have this thread included in my favourites, and I will look at it now and then..
If after 4 weeks i will not be assured that the project is totally open and
the results will be freely available, i am coping out back to the F@H.
Best regards, Artyom.

Doesn't seem like a profit.

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

I the Request for Proposals document I was given the impression that the results would simply be given to the organization that was doing the research, which makes sense as the computing aspect is not usually going to output complete and understandable results without being analyzed by the researchers.

Also in that document, it said that one of the considerations as to whether or not a proposal would be accepted was whether or not the results would be broadly disseminated.

To me that suggests that IBM isn't in this for profit. (besides, there are alot better ways to make money than by taking on charity cases)

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

Hi all,

I have read the license and found the following below listed text. They transfer the ownership to another company and these rules give them the right to change the rules at any time and uups, suddenly are we in the middle of an commercial project or there are no more public results.

Sorry guys, as long as WCG & IBM don't officialy say/promise here on this website, that all results will be available for everybody on this planet for free and that this can't be changed in the future, I / our company will not join. I will now switch off my client, but keep an eye on this website, because the idea is very good and I really would like to help with our PC's, but not under these conditions.

Greetings from Switzerland, Joe eoJ

"IBM WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO TRANSFER ONE OR MORE OF OWNERSHIP, MANAGEMENT, AND CONTROL OF THE WCG TO ANOTHER ENTITY. IN THE THAT EVENT, YOU AGREE THAT THIS AGREEMENT AND ITS PROVISIONS WILL ALSO APPLY TO THAT OTHER ENTITY.

THIS IS THE ENTIRE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PARTIES RELATING TO YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE WCG, AND IT SUPERSEDES ANY PRIOR ORAL OR WRITTEN AGREEMENTS OR UNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT IT.

THIS AGREEMENT MAY NOT BE MODIFIED BY YOU. WE WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO MODIFY THIS AGREEMENT AT ANY TIME, AND YOUR SUBSEQUENT PARTICIPATION WILL BE GOVERNED BY THE MODIFIED AGREEMENT. WE WILL NOTIFY YOU OF A MODIFIED AGREEMENT BY POSTING THE MODIFIED AGREEMENT ON THE WCG WEB SITE OR BY E-MAIL, REGULAR MAIL, FAX, OR PHONE."

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

I too am turning off my client. I assume there is no clear answer because the results are not going to the public domain. If they were, I'm sure it would be publicized everywhere. This is disappointing to me, and unless someone posts a clear answer, I am ambandoning the project.

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

I found this quote in the Project Archives:

"In the first 72 hours, 100,000 results were returned. Overall, the project identified 44 strong treatment candidates, which were handed to the U.S. Department of Defense for further evaluation."

It may be a good cause or even non-profit, but I don´t think the U.S. Department of Defense will share their results with the world, and I doubt that a potential cure for AIDS developed with the current project will be shared with the world either. I think the commercial intrests of the western pharma-industry will remain more important than millions of dying Africans.

My client is turned off until further notice!!

Re: Is this a Non-Profit organization ??

I am turning off my client too.
There are too many things that make me think someone can patent the results of my pc's spare time....
The cause is good, but the deal is not clear enough....
