OMG I did not realize that I sneaked ahead of RT for a day at least! I have over the years tried to buy up scale GPU's in the thought of using them for other projects or for WCG when they got around to it! So basically waiting for the day. Have considered buying the 8 GHz ones but figured the cost will come down with time, am not a gamer and no urgent need for one currently. Will reconsider if and when WCG delves into that arena. Have a great day and do not expect to again be able to say I out scored RT for a day for quite a bit!!!

It was a record day for many of us. Basically, with the new credit system, we're claiming about double what we were. If you're returning a task that the wingman returned before the upgrade (or vice versa), you'll get roughly fifty percent more points granted than in the past. Gonna be interesting to see the claimed/granted numbers on tasks that went out after the upgrade. I don't have time to dig into this and understand it right now and after all, the points/credits are just for fun but... As a matter of principle, I really dislike rubber rulers. ![]() Agreed on both counts. I think this is due more to the BOINC folks than WCG. It happened to WCG because of new server code. I think the BOINC folks are trying to address the variation in credit given by different BOINC projects for comparable work. I hope you are right in that the points/credits across distributing processing organizations should be somewhat comparable and I understand they are not. On the other hand, the WCG has maintained the integrity of its system and not attempted to poach contributors as other organizations have. I sincerely appreciate that "High-Road" approach to conducting themselves. I worry that with the changing technologies and the changing rulings on points and credits, that sense of stability and credibility will be tarnished. In any case, no one asked me. ![]() Agreed as well. I think WCG will fare well. They do have a long good history and I seriously doubt any significant change. I think (semi-educated speculation) the "behavior" of some other projects and how they granted credit contributed to the comparability issue to the point that the BOINC folks were more or less forced to try to address it. Sad that such would be necessary but probably a good thing in the long run. |

In any case, no one asked me. ![]() Where can I find the rulings on points and credits. I have asked before about how credits are determined (or displayed), but I have never gotten an answer. Well, points are a legacy of the UD agent days at the beginning of WCG and WCG set a conversion of 1 BOINC credit = 7 points. As far as BOINC, I know it periodically runs its benchmarks and that basically establishes the capabilities of your machine. That factors in to the rate BOINC claims credits for a WU. The project then determines how much credit to grant. You'll see the claimed and granted for a WU on the Results Status page. Many other projects no longer even show claimed credit on their work status pages and just show what they granted. Beyond that, I'd suggest going to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and see if they have a section or a WIKI that talks about this. |

Looks like tonight's stats run failed to pick up anything from the second half of the day. I'm sure it will get fixed and rerun fairly soon. I'll post our team stats as soon as I can though it may end up being in the morning.

The following is a quote from knreed (one of the techs here at wcg). It talks about the reasons for the software upgrade we are currently enjoying:
----------------------------------------The upgrade on Tuesday is being done so that we can run GPU applications. The new server software that we will use is up to date with recent code from Berkeley. The older code that we have currently running doesn't have what is needed to send out application versions for GPUs. Therefore, we are updating and will be using updated server software. However, this update will have some disruptions when we deploy it. One of the biggest disruptions will be the new way that the server code handles identifying 'trusted' computers (ones that can process non-redundant computations without a wingman) and 'reliable' computers (ones that process resent workunits quickly). The determination of 'trusted' and 'reliable' will be changed from being determined for a specific device to being determined for a specific pairing of a device and version of a research application. This means that your computer could be trusted on FightAIDS@Home but perhaps not on Computing for Clean Water (for example). Since initially we will not have data at the device-application version level, no-one will be trusted or reliable until the data is accumulated to make that determination. This new feature is a great enhancement to the system but it will cause a short term disruption. Another disruption is that we will start using the new credit system. The aim of the new system is to better measure the efficiency of different computers and different application versions so that computers are assigned credit in a more consistent way - even across different operating systems or cpu vs gpu. I'm hopeful it will work well. However, this is one area where our development resources just doesn't reflect the diversity and scale of the thousands of volunteer systems that you all provide. As a result, we expect some surprises following the upgrade. Our plan is to monitor what happens and work through issues as they are found. The good news is that we have confidence that the research will continue to be processed correctly during the change. As a preview of the performance of the GPU version, one machine that we have been testing on is a Win7 machine with 6GB RAM, a AMD Phenom II processor oc'd to 3.9GHz and an ATI/AMD 6870 graphics card. On this computer the cpu version runs in about 70 minutes while it runs in about 6 minutes on the gpu version. The first step in moving towards the beta is to get the server code updated in production and ensure that it is stable. Then we will be ready to look at starting the beta testing for gpu. The quote is from this thread . |
