Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have about 5 days left before I get my gold in CEP, I only have 1 machine running cep wu's because of the time and ram it takes for them,

Yes, 256 meg of ram per work unit is a bit much. My goal of 2 years goes slow for me since I only have a couple PCs working on it. raised eyebrow

I am happy that I upgraded from 1 gig to 2 gigs of memory for my dual core, I run both cores for wu's uses allot of memory, right now one wu is using around 304 mb and the other one is using 376 mb

RAM is so cheap right now... I have 4GB in both Core 2 Quad machines and upgrading both to 8GB would cost less than $150. Heck even my dual core laptop has 4GB...

for what I run on my pc, I just don't see the need for 4-8 gigs of ram, so far I have not even got close to using my 2 gigs

What OS?
Vista and Windows Server 2008 will use as much as you throw at them, if not for loading apps and data, it will use any spare RAM as a huge disk cache.
Of course I also play around with VMs a bunch, and I have found it useful to keep more than one 3D game open at a time, and just Alt-Tab between them :D
Eating up 4GB is child's play. 8GB wouldn't be hard when I'm running VMs and a game and editing HD video...

Sadly my work machine only has 2GB on XP... RAD and WebSphere can bring that to a crawl easily... I really wish I had 3 or 4GB there... argh.

I guess if your box does nothing but crunch WCG WUs, then it would be a waste though!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I did some research and realized that running my gaming box with a Q9550 @ 3.4ghz at 1.35V was overkill. It's still rock solid stable at 1.24V, tested with Prime95 torture test on all 4 cores.

Good news: I used to see an average of 80C on all the cores with my CPU fan maxxed. Now I only see about 70C average under the same load, at 85% fan (quieter).

Now I just need to do the same thing to my server box Q9550 and maybe my office wont be so darn hot haha.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have to move my older mac pro to the basement soon. 124 degrees with fans at 1400 rpms. Heats up my living room a bit. Might shut my other pro down in the bedroom for the summer. This one runs cooler but still heats up the room. Being my video editing machine, won't put this one downstairs.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I pump pretty much all my AC through the vent in my small office, thats the only way to keep it decently cool. A little trickle of AC reaches the other rooms and keeps them plenty cool. My living room is large and lofted so the gaming box (sig) and dual core laptop don't seem to heat it up at all. The cramped office has the Q9550 server and Athlon 64 server, each with 6 hard disks.
