6 of my boxes reside in the basement. I have a combination poured concrete and granite rock foundation, circa 1920?? It has considerable mass. Most of the time it stays about 55F(12.7C).

Cheers How many boxes upstairs? My basement stays around 55F too so should keep mine cool. Plan on replacing the 2.33ghz chips with 3ghz ones later. Then it will need the coolness of my basement all the time as my temps will definately spike up. The need for speed never ends. Now if I could convince my wife I need a new mac pro.

The upstairs bedroom gets really warm in the summer(no AC), but it is a P4 1.6gz box, so I never worry about it getting too hot. Cheers

My original plan was to start buying used mac mini's but just didn't want numerous boxes all over. Decided to focus on mac pro's with 8 cores. Don't believe in virtual cores so won't be upgrading to the new ones any time soon. Prefer real cores. Can't wait for the 16 core monsters to come out. should be here in a few years.

They are almost all rebuilt from junkers, except for the AMD 2000 which I bought new some years ago. They are listed here: http://boincstats.com/stats/host_stats.php?pr...serid=240599&active=1 I really should phase out some of the PIII's, but they are dependable. Cheers

Cheers You could upgrade to dual core pc's or even quad pc's to reduce the number of boxes and save on your energy bill. Probably pay for itself due to how less energy the newer ones use. Donate the ones you have to get a tax write off too. But like you said, they are dependable. Keep on crunchin. ![]()

Keep on crunchin. ![]() Yeah, I know they are not efficient, but I have about a max of $20 invested in each of them, some I got for nothing and invested nothing. I have replaced power supplies and HDD on some. The Computer Brains guy has supplied these really cheap. He charges about a dollar a gig or less for small used drives. I usually buy 4 to 10 gig drives when he has any available. I think nobody else really wants them anyway. Too small, but they run WCG just fine. Anyway I figure the waste heat is good for the basement about 9 months out of the year. One of these days I will put out for a quad, as I have a quite a few 35mm negatives to digitize. The Athlon takes about 2 minutes per slide or negative so I need to upgrade to make any headway. Right now I am just too cheap on the hardware side, so I keep on paying the electric bill. ![]() Cheers

Quads are getting cheaper these days. Been thinking of building one using the 2 dual core xeons I have from my upgraded mac pro.
