Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Wife is a shutter bug. Has to take pictures of everything. 9/10 of the photos are hers. Probably be able to knock it down to 500 gb if we sat down one day and delete duplicates and such.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Tonight we passed a milestone of sorts. Open Pandemics has passed Help Conquer Cancer in the points column for the team. Open Pandemics 1,355,475,645,
Help Conquer Cancer 1,349,261,888. Help Conquer Cancer is still far and away ahead in the number of work units processed.
Well done team.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

have 800 GB of photos

You must take a lot of pictures. That would certainly be the pits if that crashed with no backup. Good luck with that.
Cheers

My wife has 8T of photos. She is a pro photographer and refuses to delete anything. Her workstation has RAID10 8T storage with on-site back-up. I tried the cloud but its not practical. Comcast caps me at 1T per month. I had to restore one time. It was the last time. I store everything local now.

Since she is a professional photographer, does she store her pictures in several different formats ? And at what resolution ? What kind of compression does she use ? Lossless, I presume. Does she use a captioning application ? So much I do not know about digital photography.

She shoots everything in RAW. She has had many different cameras over the years and some of the high resolution cameras, the raw files were 80MB. When editing in Photoshop, they convert to a Photoshop file (of similar size). Now consider there can be several hundred photos per session, you easily get to 8Tb. Currently, she uses a Nikon D5 which has RAW files size of 40MB.

About a year ago, I had to move the files over to a RAID1 disk over Ethernet. as files are transferring, you spend a lot of time browsing how to make the process faster. Her next workstation will have all the disks connected on HBA, no more Ethernet to a back-up.

Hopefully it will be online this summer so I can catch SD Surfer.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

With the warmer weather starting up, my upstairs cruncher will go dark until fall. My AMD cruncher in the basement will crunch during the summer. But if we have a hot summer needing the AC on most of the time, will shut that one down too. This weekend is going to be a scorcher.

With the weather in the 90's F(32C) I will probably cut back a bit with some systems which are on the same circuit as the window air conditioner. Probably just run them at night if it cools off, but if I run the air, I will leave them shut down for a while.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

They said it was going to be hot and it is. 97F(36.6C). Probably going to be hotter tomorrow. I shut down several systems this morning and will restart them around 9:00 PM or so if it cools off enough. I changed my oil yesterday when it was a bit cooler. I am glad I did not put off until today. What little moisture we got is being baked out. We could use some more rain, but it does not look likely for the next few days.

It appears that Paul D has retired from our team. We appreciate his contribution. Best of luck to him where ever he lands.
