Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Seriously folks, if you're running "old" computers just for WCG or BOINC, sell them or donate them and just pop one of these in one of your newer PCs:

$100 after rebate. About 70W of draw which gets you 220K-260K WCG points per day.

Or you you have enough PCI x16 slots, buy two or three! :)

For a really true reading of points per watt you'd need to find out how many watts of power your machine is using measured at the wall socket. Your card may have a peak draw of 75 watts but your real usage is probably closer to double that or more depending on your hardware.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

draws about 63-70 watts of additional power when running BOINC vs BOINC suspended.

Oy yeah, pissing contest tongue
My additional power need is 11 W, makes sense because CPU max power is 17W.

Sure are small these new models, here is compared to iPad.

My server machines and HTPC run 24/7 anyway so for me the useful comparison is ON and idle vs ON and running WCG. So, that's what I measured.

Anyway, what I'm advocating is adding a 7770 to a machine that is already assumed to be running 24/7 doing CPU-only work units. So, you add the 70W ongoing cost and the $100 initial investment and you get 220K+ points per day!

My laptop with an AMD A8-4500M APU does 20-25K WCG points per day and that is a 35W max APU. I have it running 2 CPU tasks plus 1 GPU task.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I see the weather service has revised our snow totals upward now to a total of 8in(20cm). Supposedly starting tomorrow(Monday) and snowing most of Tuesday. At least the temperatures will stay fairly warm with highs around 32F(0C). We do need the moisture. Everybody drive carefully.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The brunt of this storm is expected to pass east of us, so we're only supposed to get about 5 inches. Although I'm getting tired of getting more snow every week, I am so glad that we're getting moisture this winter. Hopefully the drought will be completely over this summer.

About the same here. I blew out the driveway about 06:00 this morning while it was still snowing. Others here needed to get to work/school etc. Did it again about 11:00 because it was almost done snowing. It is continuing very lightly yet. This is some of the cleanest snow I have ever seen. I will bet the snowmobilers will be zipping up and down my ditch to all hours tonight. At least it is fairly warm for the moment 34F(2C).
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We have a couple of cold nights coming on the back end of the system then the warm up should help the roads get clear again.
