Re: Minnesota Crunchers

How big of flash drive are you using? The OS and boinc are on the flash drive?

I've used this before http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/DotschUX-USB_Installation.html
Pretty cool.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Would think the constant read/write would kill a thumb drive in a month. Especially running boinc. Couldn't imagine running cep2 on a thumb drive. Would die in a week.

8gb flash drive. Cost less than $10.00 at Micro Center. It will be interesting to see how long it holds up. Yes, both the OS and BOINC are on the drive. They are the only things the machine runs. I have an identical one with a 20gb hd on it so it will be interesting to see if one is faster than the other. So far they seem to be about the same speed.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Be curious how many watts that machine is pulling at the socket. A cheap 30gb ssd would probably be close to the thumb drive, but never considered it.

I upgraded to 11.4 on ubuntu yesterday on one of my machines. Been trying to get wireless going on 10.10 with no luck. I've read 11.4 was already setup for wireless for my linksys AE1000 but still not working. Followed the instructions online but nothing. Anyone care to suggest a better wireless USB stick to use?

I do not have a wattmeter, but after loading the OS I disconnected the the cables to both optical drives and the floppy drive. If they are not connected, they can't use any juice.I may have to invest in a meter because now you have me curious.

biggrin I also see we have broken the 1000 year mark biggrin

Sold my quads today. On the hunt for a hex. Stats will be reduced for a bit until I can find one.

Maybe you want to wait until the ivy bridge chips come early next year and see how much bang for the buck you get there.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Got to stick with 1366 to finish this system I pulled them from. Wanted to get rid of the ES chips that were in there. Tried selling the whole system but folks were spooked about ES chips. Looking on eBay at some E5645's. Still 500 plus. Only 2.4ghz.
Was looking at prices on the new 8 core xeons. Prices aren't cheap. Will watch the reviews when released. For now, I'll fill these slots and see what I can do.
Thanks.
