Re: Minnesota Crunchers

How about a micro ATX dual processor board?
http://www.trentontechnology.com/single-board...dded-motherboards/jxm7031 .
May not be the most powerful but can definitely be a good cruncher in small places.

Can you find a price on that somewhere? It also only takes the special low-power Xeons (EC series) which probably cost quite a lot, for their performance.
I can't find either on Newegg...

I tried google to see who was selling the chips. Nothing comes up. Suspect a special deal through that company. Might send an email to that company to see who much they want for the board and chips. Probably expensive. Will let you know what I find out.

I received an email from that company. Told them my interest is for WCG and overclocking. Here is the response:

Randy-

Sounds like an interesting organization. Well, I hate to discourage a potential customer, but the reality is that Trenton focuses on the embedded market and we are US designed and manufactured. Both of which serve out niche well, but also typically price us out of the home user market. You are looking at at least a $2,500 sticker price with out memory which could add up to another $1,000. Intel's published 1k pricing on the processors is $519.00 each.

Let me know if you are still interested as I would love to sell you some boards.:

I emailed them back asking if the processors come with it or not. Presume they do not. Will find out though.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Here is another response about with processors:
2500 would be the board and the processors.  No memory.

Still a bit pricey considering I just built a dual quad core 2.66ghz westmere system for under 3 grand. Don't think they will sell many.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I helped a little. My 8 core harpertown did a little over 33000 and my westmere box did a little over 55000 on the 11th. Wish I could find some cheap harpertowns to replace The woodcrest chips. 2ghz box is a bit slow, but at least it crunches.

Yeah, no doubt they have a very specific target market. $2500 could build FOUR bare-bones Phenom X6 crunching machines, if you're smart about it. With a little overclocking, that's like 80ghz of processing power.

Actually, that's super easy, newegg has a combo deal for an ENTIRE X6 system:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.555987
That's a whole X6 system for under $600 (the motherboard has a Radeon built in for video)! The mail-in rebate will probably cover shipping too.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That's a sweet deal. I have to sell one of my crunchers before building another. The other half would string me up if I built another.
