Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I saw on the news a couple days ago the government is considering changing the laws. I think they should allow permit at 15 BUT apply for license at 17. This gives them 2 years practice. Also, no minors riding in the car for first 6 months after receiving license. They should tie there grades with it but they tried years ago and lost. Time to make car kits for cell phones so NO handling of cell phones while driving. I've used them before and work. Our state is weak on enforcement on the kids!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Had my internet service go down for about 24 hours. Evidently some problem in the the towers. Came real close to running out of work completely. I see it is going to start getting cold next week also. Lows in the single digits F (-15C). That should start freeziing the ground pretty solid.

I see also lots of little flags and spray paint in my ditch. Another company is running a major fiber optic line about 15 feet from the house. Boy, would I like to tie into that.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

That's part of connect America. How far from town do you live? If that fibre optic is from your ISP, I'll bet you could get connected. I would love to have fibre optic to the house. It will happen in the future. Just a matter of time. My DSL sucks. About 2 miles outside of town.
Hope we get a good coat of snow before we get frigid. Got my new plow on my Polaris ranger to test out. Looks like the only plowing I'll be doing this winter. Won't know for sure till I see the doc early next month.
Wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVINGS! Be safe this holiday. wink

BTW Joe, how's the new cruncher coming along?

I could not get it to recognize the Fujitsu drive, so I broke down and got a HP branded one. The BIOS recognizes the drive but the neither Linux nor windows will recognize it. I need to do some more research. A work in progress yet.

Update: After much fooling about with the BIOS settings and the ROM utility I finally got it to recognize one of the drives. Hallelujah. Linux installed now. Currently downloading 322 updates. The chips are 2.4 gz Xeons. More later.

Update #2 : Got Boinc installed and attached to WCG. Downloaded a bunch of jobs and we will see how they do.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

If I remember right, you said with hyper threading. Should be a good cruncher. My dual 2ghz woodcrest crunches about 35 per day on clean water. Am still trying to find cheap quad cores. Not much luck. Still around 300 a pop. Will keep looking.

HP Proliant DL360 G3. Not that fast a cruncher, but not too bad for the $35 and couple of frustrating hours I invested in it. The fans do make a lot of noise. After an initial shakedown phase it will go out in the former hog barn with rest of the outside machines. It gave me an initial reading of 950 on the floating point benchmark.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Changed Internet and phone provider to Clear.com from Comcast. Clear is a WiMax 4G technology. (http://www.clear.com/coverage)
I was tired of over paying Comcast so I switched. Not as fast at times as Comcast but so far I'm relatively satisfied. Saving 30-40 bucks a month.
I don't personally own a cell phone (going on 8 years now) so I still need a land line. My friends call me a Luddite but I despise cell phones. not talking
