Re: Minnesota Crunchers

11 more days and i'll get rubi on CEP.. Seems more work units were released. I finally ordered the computer parts to build around the 2 xeon processors i have laying around from the old mac pro i sold. 4 cores for now. Once the prices drop a bit more on the quads, then will put them in.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Best buy has a cheap quad core for under 500. It was a gateway. I almost grabbed it but pretty sure to cheap to run 24/7. The next one up was a ASUS for a little over 600. Figured since I already have server chips, might as well use them. Only 2ghz but building this for future expansion so it will take quad chips when I am ready. Never built one before so guess I'll find out next week if she works.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Quite a show this morning. A rolling thunderstorm. Some of the lightning strikes were close and crackling. All over by about 09:30, so I am now back up and running. The rain gauge showed 2.5 in.(6.35cm). Now will come the heat and humidity. The radio is listing flash flood warnings for Wright, Anoka and northern Hennepin counties. That would be about 40 miles(64km) south and east of me.

Need to pick zucchini this morning before it gets too big.

Cheers

Based on the experience where I work I would stay away from the Gateways. Next to impossible to get parts for them, especially if they are the Profile configuration. I would be guessing the regular desktops have industry standard parts so they would not be a problem. I think they are building them with the cheapest parts they can find so they keep the price down.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yeah, I knew gateway is cheepo stuff. Asus was tempting but what the heck. Give building one a try. 25 years messing with computers, always wanted to build one. If this turns out good, then will save and do a big build with the new 6 core chips coming out from intel. Not sure if boinc can handle 24 cores from one machine. Would be a sweet machine though.

Nice we finally got a bunch of rain. Still down a few inches though. Winter is going to be interesting.

Had the HD go on my second slowest cruncher. Do not think I will resurrect again. With a new HD it would still work but I think I will put my efforts into a more efficient machine. It was a PIII 497 mhz. I will have to see what I can put together for less than $100.00.

Cheers

Was this a name brand computer or one put together? Yeah, its not worth resurrecting that old beast. Give it a proper burial a get at least a dual core.

It was an old Gateway. I had already replaced the HD twice and the power supply once. I had picked it up at a county auction a number of years ago for, I think, $10.00 or so. I will save the power supply, CD drive, floppy and the case, it is a low profile desktop unit. I will recycle the rest. Then I will try to build a better one when I get time.

Cheers
