You guys are weenies. Just get some beefy UPS devices and run them through hell and high water. biggrin

One time back in Rochester a storm knocked out power but not cable, so I EMAILED the electric company to notify them of the outage. Awesome. (Phone line was constantly busy signal).

I have laptop avec two doulbebatties and 3G dongle, so I can go 12h even if my house would burn down...
So I can order warm food without leaving confornt of my home's ruins.

Beside I'm sure that my new 3G is even faster'n than your crappy phone line..

Got on 1100 VA APC for my web-server. The rest can shutdown hard, that's what a journal-ed file system is for, right? whistling

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Weenie or not, I have experienced what happens when lightning strikes nearby. Years ago in 1980, I was in a chair reading. The chair was positioned next to the antenna jack for the television. We did not have a television then, so there was nothing plugged into the jack. Lightning hit the roof antenna and blew the jack completely out of the wall. There was some college students who rented the basement in that house(we rented the main floor) and they did have a television plugged in to the antenna jack. Their TV was turned into a crispy critter.
My power does fluctuate, especially in the summer, I suppose depending on the system usage. I really do not want a voltage spike frying all my electronics. A UPS would be nice, but I have systems plugged in all over the house.Fully buffered power from the breaker box would be just the thing, but that is not happening($$$$).
Anyway got 2 in.(5.08cm) of rain last night and another 1/2 in(1.27cm) during the day. I see the Twin Cities must be getting it tonight.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

A UPS works great when brown outs happen during the summer.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

We got about .4 inches this morning and believe it or not the thunderstorms completely fell apart as the hit Bloomington this late afternoon. Still no storms this season here.
