Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I am running a I7 965 and a I7 920 with HT and they process 8 tasks at a time, and process a lot of work. I do not overclock and have no heat problems, they run 24x7.

BOINC Average is
1 Intel(R) Core(tm) i7 CPU 965 @ 3.20GHz 1(8) Microsoft Windows Vista 3,781 -
2 Intel(R) Core(tm) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz 1(8) Linux 2,203 -

These are probably the two fastest machines on the team right now.

http://boincstats.com/stats/host_cpu_stats.ph...d=6206&st=0&or=10

The I7 965 at the top is mine. There seems to be three I7 920's on the team that are bringing down the avearge, mine would probably be second at 2,203.

My question though is have you tried running 4 instances instead of 8 for a few days, and measured their average points over that period to compare?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I got a ASUS server board for my xeons. 2 dual core 2ghz xeons so they shouldn't get to hot. Is this set through the bios or a separate program on the disc that comes with the mobo? Nice thing about this board is I can swap out the xeons to the 45nm chips later when the prices drop. 2 quads are definitely in the future.

I typed ABIT mistakenly when I meant ASUS. Fixed my post above.

You should be able to download the ASUS software suite from their website. Just go to the page specific to your motherboard and you should find it. It's called Q-Fan or AI Suite (they've changed names over the years).

Thanks for the link, that had just what I wanted.
8 WU with HT = 4.5 hours
8 WU without HT = 5 hours.

Not a huge difference, but it does help. Still, not worth the $$$ yet IMHO, I'm glad I just ordered another Q9550 :D

Just curious. What kind ? Local or mail order ? I would be really curious on how they will price the hex cores.

Cheers

It was a newegg.com order, which is what I always do, ever since I built my first computer for college, about 10 years ago.

Here's the parts list:

NZXT TEMPEST Crafted Series CS-NT-TEM-B Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
Item #: N82E16811146047
$99.99

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80569Q9550 - Retail
Item #: N82E16819115041
$219.99

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B - OEM
Item #: N82E16827118030
$25.99

HIS H485QT512P Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported IceQ4 Turbo Video Card
Item #: N82E16814161244
$129.99

ZALMAN 9500A 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler - Retail
Item #: N82E16835118223
$46.71

OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR10664GK -
Item #: N82E16820227289
$67.99

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F2EG HD154UI 1.5TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM
Item #: N82E16822152175
$119.99

CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
Item #: N82E16817139009
$139.99

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Item #: N82E16813128359
$114.99

Subtotal $940.63
Tax $0.00
UPS 3 DAYS $24.17
Order Total $964.80

There were some combo deals which is why that total might be lower than the sum of the part. Plus there is $150 worth of mail-in rebates, so the real total cost should end up being $804.

This is replacing my backup server which is currently an Athlon64. I'll be retaining most of the hard disks currently in that machine (4x750GB RAID5 in particular) and giving that machine to my parents as a backup server for their Macs.

Nice! The only thing I would change is the 5400 rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive. It makes a world of difference.

OK, Lets talk tornado's at 68 degrees. Unbelievable or what?!?! Just freakish weird!

The 7200rpm drives cost more, and had a lot more complaints of failures in the newegg comments. Plus, this drive, at least for the time being, is going in a partial RAID1 with an old 250GB ATA drive and I'm sure it can keep up with that! Also, having all that crammed next to my 4x750GB array, the 5400rpm puts out far less heat which is always nice, and I don't really need huge disk I/O for anything I do anyway - besides, even a small array of 5400rpm drives will saturate my gigabit ethernet LAN.
