Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

<snip>One last word, for those on our team more interested in crunching; yesterday we posted the highest number of daily points that our team has ever attained (thanks mostly to Fred) -- darn it, I was going to post the number but 'stats' are being updated now. Anyway, thanks to each and every one of you on our team for your help and dedication; we ARE making a difference.

Just a quick flyby, I have a couple of things to do then off to bed...

Yesterday's total was 139,449 points, or #81 in the entire WCG - that reminds me of the days my employer allowed me to use their servers (sadly, the last two remaining will disappear within a couple of months).

No, this total is due to our new members, and our dedicated long-timers. Welcome, and thanks, to all, for your desire to make a difference, and your choosing to share in our goals.

Cheers,

Check your results occasionally

I have just posted this thread to the BOINC support topic, after noticing numerous "error" computations, always on "FAAH" tasks. Take a few minutes to check your results under your "my grid" to make sure you aren't affected.

Hi,

I am getting "error" results on all my machines (XP/pro 32 and XP/pro 64, all updated to latest MS patches) only for "FAAH" computation projects. The log is similar, and the error the same for all machines:

<core_client_version>5.5.0</core_client_version>
<message>
- exit code -29 (0xffffffe3)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
Failed to get VersionInfo size: 1812
ERROR:[05:32:52] Could not open dpf file, faah5008_1hvs_1a9m_00.dpf

The machines are running different versions of BOINC (all as a service with admin permissions), are different processors (P4, P4HT, P4 Xeon, Core2, Athlon), and compute all other project tasks without error.

The machines, however, never finish a FAAH task successfully.

This is wasting a lot of computation cycles - hours and days. If I can't figure out why this is happening, I will have to block that project.

Re: Check your results occasionally

Thanks for the heads-up, Fred. I'll keep an eye out for that; I'm crunching a FAAH work unit right now -- been running it for 19 hours and it's just a little bit more than half finished.

Cheers.

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

Yesterday's total was 139,449 points, or #81 in the entire WCG

Yesterday: 162.000 points, #72 team globally.

Here's a nice summer salad recipe which will work well with an oriental-style rice-adjunct lager (Ki Rin, IchiBan, or a homebrew equivalent) served cold

From Bon Appetit magazine
Asian Noodle Salad With Eggplant

Ingredients

4 Japanese eggplants, unpeeled, cut on diagonal into 1/3-inch-thick slices
8 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms, stemmed
2 bunches green onions, trimmed
1/4 cup Asian sesame oil
1 6-ounce package dried chuka soba (Japanese-style) noodles*
1 8-ounce package sugar snap peas, trimmed
7 tablespoons hoisin sauce
3 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 teaspoons finely grated lime peel
1 1/2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger

Directions

1. Prepare barbecue (medium-high heat).
2. Combine first 3 ingredients; add Asian sesame oil and toss to coat. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
3. Grill vegetables until tender, turning often, about 7 minutes for eggplant and mushrooms and 5 minutes for green onions.
4. Transfer mushrooms and onions to cutting board; cool slightly. Slice mushrooms and onions.
5. Meanwhile, cook noodles in large pot of boiling salted water until almost tender but still firm to bite, about 3 minutes.
6. Add sugar snap peas to noodles; cook 1 minute longer. Drain well. Transfer noodle mixture to large serving bowl. Add grilled vegetables.
7. Whisk last 4 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Toss noodle salad with dressing; season with salt and pepper.

Serves 4.

*The cooking time of Japanese-style chuka soba noodles varies by a minute or two depending on the brand of noodle. Test them after three minutes to avoid overcooking.

Re: Eat, Drink, and be Crunching (Team HomeBrewers Welcomes You)

They are both home now, and he (Sawyer) is gaining weight and doing well; my daughter still has a slight infection, but seems to be healing okay.

Very glad to hear it, Bill.

Grandchildren are an absolute joy ... sometimes wink ... and my wife gets into this stuff a lot more than I do, especially since she likes to go shopping (you should see all the stuff she has bought already). I love to be around the kids (Pat and I have eight), but my older daughter babysat for my three older grandbrats ... errr, I mean grandsons ... and I don't think she wants to have children now. wink Seriously, they can be trying at times ... sometimes a LOT of times, but I love them all just the same. The nice thing about being grandparents is that you get just a small dose at a time, and you can usually send them home. laughing

Exactly - this kid will want for nothing, between parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. And now, we get to spoil him/her and give 'em back (ha!) revenge is sweet...

My son and his partner's proposal is to put a pizza and hot-sandwich "club", serving beer and mixed drinks, right across the street from the corner of the UCA college campus where the football stadium and all of the dormitories are located. They will call it "Bear Den's Pizza" ... the UCA mascot is the 'Bears'. Can you hear the cash register? biggrin

Oh yeah! Bear-themed brews? Yup... Grizzly porter, Ursa Major stout, Bear's Love honey ale... yes, let's hope the local officials keep a fair and open mind, and put this through so it can open for football season.

Cheers,

WCG has identified a bad batch of FAAH tasks, and has pulled them off the queue. You may still have one to process, or one or more waiting for validation, but no new ones will be issued. The errors have hopefully not cost you too many points.

Actually, according to the stats I see, that should be "167,378", which is a new record high for our team. I think we can manage to hang on to 95th place for one more day, especially if we repeat anywhere near that sort of performance, but I'm sure we'll probably be passed tomorrow night by BOINC@Poland. They caught up to us faster than I had predicted.

Again, a big 'THANK YOU' to everyone who has helped.

Cheers.

200,000,000 result team challenge

Fred,
I also sent you a direct message about joining this open team challenge. I think only team captains can join a challenge for a team. See this link:

Homebrewers team has been duly joined to this challenge. If there are other challenges we want to join, let's discuss it in forum before they start. I'm not about to accept any on behalf of everyone until I feel more confident about my own ability to produce points and results.

Right now, every time I feel things are going up, some problem reduces output by 20-40%. The last one was a computer freeze, and last night an electrical storm made me shut the machines down all night (safety first! no one needs fried PCs). That's not to say I don't want to join challenges, just that it has to be the concensus of those members who participate in the forum.

Good luck to us all in this challenge!

Cheers,
