Merry Christmas to all ... and Happy Hanukkah

I want to take this opportunity, since I'll be really busy over the next few days and might not have a chance to post, to wish our entire team ... and for that matter everyone at WCG ... a very MERRY CHRISTMAS, or a HAPPY HANUKKAH if that's the holiday you celebrate. PEACE ON EARTH!!!

I also want to explain that I've been so busy for the past two weeks that I haven't been able to post like I usually do. And what an exciting time for our team since we have a new member -- 'Rammie' -- who has contributed tremendously to our team since joining us on December 11th by doubling our daily points. Thanks, Rammie. As a result, we are not gaining on a LOT of teams, and putting a lot of distance between us and many of the teams which had been gaining on us. We are guaranteed to finish the year in the TOP-100 teams, and if we persist like we have for the past ten days, we will easily remain there for the foreseeable future.

Again, a BIG thank you to everyone for their contributions, whether large or small.

Cheers.

Re: Merry Christmas to all ... and Happy Hanukkah

It looks like our team should move up in the rankings tonight. Thanks, and once again, since it's Christmas Day, I want to repeat my wish that every one of you has a very warm and blessed "Merry Christmas".

Hi Bill and Fred,

Happy New Year! Yes, I am still here. Been a long time since I have had time to look at the forum.

I built a new system at home to use as my main PC and Media Center. Quad core, so that has helped my output a lot. Nothing compared to the number of systems RAMMIE had though smile . I see he moved on at the end of the year. Thanks to him (or her) for the great big boost though!

Dave

2009... here we go again!

Hi Guys,

Thanks to Rammie for Major contributions at the end of last year, and hi, hello and peaceful brewing to all of you brewers still hanging about.

Yes, Bill, I get to go places and discover things (like the damn fine wines from Orange in NSW Australia - hey, there's a winery there I would LOVE to buy... Maybe as a retirement project?? http://www.indigowines.com.au/ For now, we're stuck in Tucson as neither my parents nor my in-laws want to move, and we won't let them get put into nursing homes...Ah well, it's an interesting dream, anyway)

Back in reality, my 4 work machines were offline for 2 weeks due to a configuration problem with the new network connection in my new office. It's been fixed, and I expect point totals to start climbing again. I should have time this weekend to upgrade my TV computer with its new processor, then I'll have to start looking at upgrading my file server - not only is it within 1/2 terabyte of being full, but it's just not keeping up with network demand... Probably not until I return from the Phillippines next month though. Meanwhile, I attempted to recruit two people in AUS and met with a vote of no-interest.

I probably won't even have time to brew before it warms up again. Sigh..

Cheers

Misc admin stuff

First, I have seen reports of invalid FAAH (fight AIDS at home) work units again. Check your machines for invalid units, or just cancel your FAAH units before they even run, just to make sure.

Next, if you are contemplating a new video card or PC, you will want to look at nVidia, because World Community Grid will soon support its CUDA environment, which allows BOINC work units to be processed on your video card:

Just to make any geeks out there drool, nVidia now has supercomputer-rated plug-in card units which you can put into your PC, for the purpose of graphical or parallel processing computing - including, soon, WCG (we hope).

One place to buy it (probably not the cheapest):

Homebrewers Secret

...actually it's about those nVidia supercomputer cards. If anyone wants to try one or more, please let me know in the next two weeks. I've found a distributor in the far east that will sell them for a great discount from the retail available in the USA, and even lower than the UK price (which was already significantly less than the US available price).

This offer is only good for long-standing Homebrewers team members. If you would like my assistance in configuring a system, please let me know as we will take the discussion offline; it's not the type of information I'd want to share with competing teams, if you understand my meaning.

For reference, a list of the top 500 supercomputers in the world (401-500):

Cheers

Re: Homebrewers Secret

Hi, Fred. It's good to hear from you again. I'm still doing what I can do, especially trying to recruit for our team, but I have been facing a difficult personal problem since October which is taking an enormous amount of my time and energy, which explains why my usual posts have dropped off substantially. Hopefully I'll be able to get back in the saddle sometime soon.

Cheers.

Well, Bill, best of luck with that, I hope things clear up soon for you.

Team Progress

Thanks, Fred, for wishing me luck. Things have not changed much; it's a very slow process that I'm going through, and we're really struggling but I'm sure it will eventually work out.

As for our team, we've been able to hold onto 89th place for a lot longer than I expected. But now it looks like we're going to slip to 90th in the next two days, but we should be able to hold onto that for some time, thanks to the big crunchers like you and several others. We're also on the verge of passing one HUNDRED million points. I never thought I'd see that happen when we first started and were generating only 10 or 20 thousand points a day. I continue to make efforts to recruit, but not so often to offend the brewing community; I think we pretty well have gotten the word out, so I don't expect any big jumps in our membership from now on.

Anyway, a big thanks to everyone for their help.

Cheers.

Hey Bill, good to hear from you. If there is anything I can assist with in any way, you have my contact info (and if you don't I will resend it)

That is impressive, thanks to you as well, and to all the other members who've stuck around long enough to see the milestone.

Cheers
