Tonight we moved back to 96th place, but the University of Kaiserslautern is coming on strong and should pass us in about 5 or 6 days. There are no other teams that I've noticed who are likely to pass us very soon, and we aren't close enough to pass anyone else for awhile. Still, our team is doing very well, and I think we are very likely to remain in the Top-100 for the rest of the year. Good job, everyone.
Cheers. |

Hey, Bill, I think I have a handle on the computer problems with that new machine - believe it or not, it works perfectly (overclocked and all) at work, just not at home. I think the difference is that at home it's plugged into a UPS... I'll update everyone on this rather strange thing in case any of you should happen to run across it. Keep up the good brewing... (it's almost cider season... WOO HOO) Cheers FB |

Hi, Fred, ... and everyone else. Glad to see that you've figured out a problem; seems very strange that UPS would have anything to do with it, but then I'm pretty ignorant about over-clocking computers. Is your UPS coupled to your computer via the serial port or by USB for UPS software purposes? Maybe the software knows that your computer is only supposed to be pulling 'x' amount of current, and so it limits it to that. Still strange, though.
----------------------------------------In the world of homebrewing, I was supposed to bottle today, but wasn't feeling very good, so I postponed it. Naturally, that means my carboys are still unavailable for any new brews, but I've got a busy schedule this week anyway, and probably wouldn't be able to get around to brewing until Thursday. That will probably be my new bottling day, and then I'll brew on Friday; I used to do them on the same day, but it's just too much work when you're doing double batches. I noticed that our team has done exceptionally well the last few days, posting what I think are our second and third highest daily points in the last two days, and averaging over 150k for five days. Obviously, we owe a very big thank you to Fred, Dave the Brewer, and the many other members who generate large numbers of points, but everyone deserves a pat on the back for contributing whatever they can -- large or small. Keep up the great work. I'm proud that a bunch of 'Homebrewers' (and non-brewing friends) have made such an enormous contribution to help all of mankind. Cheers. Maybe the software knows that your computer is only supposed to be pulling 'x' amount of current, and so it limits it to that. Still strange, though. Hi Bill, What occurred to me is that the UPS (which is an "always online" model instead of a "standby" model, so that it's always generating its own power to the output plugs, instead of waiting for a drop, then switching over to batteries) does not generate sine wave power (what the power company generates). Instead, it generates square waves. The overall amperage is the same averaged over a time period (>1/30 sec) but the power is either "on" or "off" which creates a whole lot of "noise" instead of pure clean power. Most computer power supplies can handle this just fine - that's why UPS makers do that; it's cheaper and just as good. However, I wonder if this computer's power supply is more sensitive, which causes noisy power to arrive on the low voltage (computer) side. Since that is the most advanced computer I have on that UPS / circuit (the other quad core is on an APC unit elsewhere in the house) perhaps the other computers don't react because they run at lower speeds and with higher tolerance components. I do have two UPS units there; I think after I have completed testing at work, I'll first plug it into the wall directly, then the other UPS, to determine if it's that particular unit, or non-pure-sinewave UPSes in general. Thanks to you as well, Bill, both for starting this mad endeavor, and for your own contributions. I'm sorry to hear you're under the weather, I hope it passes quickly. Cheers, FB |

OUTSTANDING!!! Our team just set a new team record for points generated in one day -- 165,016. Plus, our average over the past 14 days has been a phenomenal 155,825!!! Let's see if we can manage to keep it over 150k/day.
----------------------------------------I'm so excited that I decided to look ahead ... all the way to the #1 team. We are gaining on a number of teams that are ahead of us, but at our current rate of crunching, we are gaining on a LOT of teams. Excluding several teams who are waivering back and forth at about 150k/day, and which we are still VERY SLOWLY gaining upon, I have identified _23_ other teams who we are DEFINITELY gaining upon. Some of them are so far ahead of us that it might take a couple of years for us to catch them at our current rates, but we might recruit a few more members and they might slip in their crunching, so we might catch them quicker than it appears. We should pass one within a week, and a couple of others within another week. Since I don't see any team coming up fast behind us, we should move up to #95 or possibly #94 in the next couple of weeks. Here are links to the 23 teams we are gaining upon, with 'Homebrewers' listed on the third link: http://tinyurl.com/52nhxq http://tinyurl.com/4quzde http://tinyurl.com/4x82p2 Now, call me crazy, but I just looked behind us all the way back past the 800th team, below 6,300,000 points (I sort of look at this like 'solitare') ... and there are only 17 teams gaining on us -- many of them so far behind that it will take a year or longer to catch us. So I am going to predict that there is a very good possibility, if we keep crunching as we have been for the past couple of weeks, that we can remain in the Top-100 teams until our anniversary in 2009 ... and maybe beyond. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! Here are links to the 17 teams that are gaining on us: http://tinyurl.com/3jvsny http://tinyurl.com/54mvud http://tinyurl.com/3sauek THANK YOU!! ... again to all of our team members. Cheers. Well, we managed to move back into 96th place tonight, and we should advance at least two more spots -- possibly three -- over the course of another week, so we are finally regaining some position.
And this news is a few days old, but our team set a new record high points in one day of 173,214 on 9/25. Thanks again, and please keep up the good work. Bill Velek |

Now in 95th place ... and soon to be 93rd. Great crunching, team. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations, team. We're now in 94th place, and 93rd is coming soon; we should pass 'IBM IT Center Mainz' in 10 or 11 days. Also, we set a new record high a couple of days ago on Monday night with 186,002 points!!!
----------------------------------------Here are links to the 20 remaining teams we are gaining upon, with 'Homebrewers' listed on the third link: http://tinyurl.com/4mubld http://tinyurl.com/4bo26m http://tinyurl.com/4wrmvh Here are links to the 16 teams that are gaining on us (Team Daniele, the former 17th team, is no longer gaining on us): http://tinyurl.com/5ypshp http://tinyurl.com/3zf8ts Thanks again to all of our team members; keep up the good work. Sorry that I haven't posted for a couple of weeks, but I've been extremely busy trying to help my son set up a pizza and sandwich restaurant with a bar; he finally opened last night. Now I can start doing some of my own stuff, like bottling two batches of beer that I wanted to bottle two weeks ago.
Anyway, regarding team business, we DID move to #93, and we should move to #92 before our anniversary in four weeks -- November 21st -- when our team will be three years old. Thanks for all the support and great crunching. Cheers. |

That would be cool. Probably some law prohibiting that, eh? |
