Re: Team Progress

Hi all,

Thanks, Bill, for the update. Yes, we had a good run, and I'm sorry there isn't any new, fresh talent wanting to take the reins and push the team - all us old guys are just too darn busy.

Hi, Ultima, welcome. Your brew sounds very traditional, like something passed down through many generations. Where did you hear about such a brew?

Hi Sgt Joe, good to see you in here again. Everything going well in cold country?

I am having trouble getting BOINC to work correctly on my Windows 2008 Server (64 bit), which is a shame, really, since the machine is running an AMD Phenom 2 quad core CPU which mostly sits idle.

It's apparently a recognized bug in BOINC, on servers which are DCs (domain controllers), that is, they have an Active Directory service running on them. AD completely replaces the standard security mechanisms in the server software, so the 'normal' installer doesn't know how to handle it. It is to be fixed whenever development milestone 6.12 is complete. I don't have a login to the BOINC developer's site, so I can only see that it's been assigned to and accepted by the primary BOINC developer, Rom W.

Another note, if you want to install BOINC as a service on a system running Vista or Windows 7, you'll need to click on the "advanced" button in the configuration screen during setup, and make sure to check the "protected application execution" box. It's no longer the default installation, so you may not be using your machine to its fullest potential if you don't have it checked.

Cheers

Not even that cold yet here. 45F yesterday. How's DavetheBrewer ?
Looking forward to my Christmas beers from my wife - a 12 pack variety, which takes me about the rest of the year to drink. She picks out different beers which I have not tried yet. Some very interesting tastes.

That server would make a nice cruncher if and when you get it running. Good luck.

Cheers

Fred,

Last week I ran into someone else on the team that mentioned that same problem to me. He was planning to get around it by trying to run Boinc in a separate virtual machine on the system. Have you explored that option? If you are interested I can send him a note to see if it worked.

Hi Sgt Joe,

Finally had a chance to check back in here. I'm doing good except for being tired of shoveling snow! This three day storm of ours is going to be a killer, but at least it is not going to be 30 inches like in DC.

Think when it quits we will have about 12 inches.
