Re: Now we're #91 crying ... but still in the TOP HALF PERCENT and still hangin on

Thanks, Fred, for your dedication and all that you have done.

Not a worry, Bill, I am sorry I have not been the captain I'd like to be, for many reasons (some under my control, and others not), but I will continue to try putting more resources to the effort, even though it appears I will have to buy all of them myself.

but you folks who are into overclocking blow my mind and are WAY far ahead of me. Do you cool your computers with cold water? For those less familiar with computers, I am ABSOLUTELY SERIOUS. Many overclockers pump cold water through heat sinks on their motherboards to remove excess heat.

I personally do not, mostly for cost reasons (water cooling is very expensive), but also because in the experience of most users, eventually, the system leaks somewhere. I am also quite new at overclocking, since it hasn't been a priority for me in the past to get every last cycle out of a CPU. Now, it's become a matter of keeping up with all of the other teams and crunchers, and I actually have thought of it before purchasing the boards / processors / memory (all of which are critical to making it work).

So, when I purchase my Phenom quad core, I will buy the "black" edition, which is fully unlocked for all overclocking. I will also have to buy the fastest memory with the lowest latency possible, and with heat removing coverings over the chips, and put it all in a case with airflow carefully directed to cool all of the critical parts.

A couple of weeks ago I did a TRIPLE partigyle.

How did that go? (Did you ever get another hydrometer?)

Cheers

Re: Now we're #91 crying ... but still in the TOP HALF PERCENT and still hangin on

Re cooling your motherboard, seems like I've heard of heat pipes being used; they are supposed to be extremely conductive of heat, and then you could use a variety of means to cool the opposite end of the pipe.

My triple partigyle is still sitting in three carboys, along with the two I just did yesterday during a double partigyle. I'll probably bottle the triples next weekend.

No, I never did replace my hydrometer because I now have a refractometer. I realize that I probably ought to have one in addition to the other, but I seem to be getting by okay.

As for your performance as Captain, you've done just fine. Just because you're Captain doesn't obligate you to perform miracles crunching points; we all do what we can, and there is so little activity that there's not much for you to do as Captain anyway. I mean, even if we issued a challenge to another team, you and I ... and maybe a FEW others like Dave the Brewer ... would be the only ones to talk about it. Some teams really get into issuing awards and certificates or whatever; I don't know about the rest of our team, but I couldn't care less about that stuff.

Cheers.

Fred B:
I don't mean to butt in here, but I am curious about the build you have for your system, the quad. Would you be interested in publishing the components you used to put it together ? Good beer and good crunchin. Crunch on!!!!!!!

Cheers

Sgt. Joe, you're not butting in. We're happy to see visitors when ever they want to drop in. Have you ever tried to brew your own beer?

Re: Now we're #91 crying ... but still in the TOP HALF PERCENT and still hangin on

Never tried brewing my own. Leave that to those with the know-how. I don't drink alot of beer, but I drink alot of different kinds. For Christmas each year my wife gets me a variety of beers (12 to 18), all different mostly from any I've had before. It will take me most of the year to drink them. I keep them in the basement where it is cool and dark year around and I have never had any get skunky. I keep the unique bottles and have quite a collection. Someday I will catalog them just to see how many there are. I am very appreciative of the brewers art.

Cheers

Taking a quick nose-dive now crying

Tonight we will be passed by 'US Furries', then probably by 'Combined Torrent Communities' in a few days, and finally by the 'Edwardians' in a week, to drop us to 94th place. Losing our place in the Top 100 is quickly approaching, but thanks goes out to everyone for all of their help.

Cheers.

Ouch! You're right; that's what I get for just 'eye-ball' guesstimating the figures.

But you can brew some beer for us. wink devilish
Party's at my house in Arkansas for you and a few cute girls that you can bring along. biggrin

Keep up the good work.

You, too. As much as I hate being passed, I'm happy to see all that crunching, and for only 30 members. Must be a dedicated group. We have a lot of deadwood; people join, push up our number of members, and then don't produce ANY points at all. I don't know how WCG continues to carry them as members. There ought to be a policy that if any member doesn't produce points for 90 days, that they are automatically dropped from the rolls. Otherwise the WCG and teams just have inflated numbers. We're carrying SEVERAL members who haven't generated any points in over TWO YEARS. Whatever.

Cheers.

Sounds tempting! biggrin
And wisely spoken about sleeping members. There are stat-sites on Boinc which shows if a member is active or not, but that's just on Boinc.
Guess we have to live it the way it is.
Cheers.
