Ady and myself have a very good understanding of BOINC, if you have any questions then just ask. cool

See you around

Thanks, again. I have to leave for court in a few minutes, so this will need to wait until later.

Cheers.

I hope they don't bang you up for too long Bill, perhaps you'd better store up 18 months of work on your machine just in case....

What do you mean by "the set up"? Are you talking about the program to make these things? I'm sure I'll be happy from now on with what I have, and I've stored it on my personal site (my sig file draws it from there). However, maybe there are some other HomeBrewers out there needing one.

As for BOINC, I'll take a look at your links when I have a little more time than now.

By the way -- for everyone's benefit -- I've found that you can drop the "http://" from in front of the links to images in your sig file. Even with TinyURL links, that was the only way I was able to put so many pieces together for my sig.

Thanks again.

By set up i mean a .jpg of the web page with the numbers in the correct boxes. wink

I've got some cheap stuff blushing -- eMachines. But they do the job for what I need them for.

The one in my son's room is an eMachines T1115 (quite a few years old, as I recall), with a 1.0ghz CPU (probably a Celeron). I just put a new 120 Gig HD in it a month or two ago, and wish I had bothered to check the RAM because it's still just the original 128Meg.

My computer is an eMachines T2682 with a 2.6ghz CPU, upgraded to 512meg RAM and an extra HD (80g + 160g). What I need to do is see if I can take the 512m RAM out of mine and put it in my son's, and just get a gig of RAM for mine. I'll need to check into that; it's probably the best way to get a performance boost from both of them. When I was running UD on both, my computer was typically rated at 138 to 140 (sometimes lower if I had a lot going on, such as running a virus scan). My son's computer was rated at only about 88 running UD. I played with it a bit and got BOINC running on it okay; actually, I think it's been running okay for a couple of days according to the manager. When I had time to check a few days ago, I was getting strange messages on the BOINC manager which led me to believe that something was wrong. But it has completed some work units, and Task Manager shows that BOINC and Rosetta are both running.

I do have a question about BOINC. When I set up UD, it permitted me to configure the amount of hard drive space I wanted to devote to it, and I had it set for the max -- which indicated 9.77GB. BOINC doesn't seem to have that option, and when I check the BOINC manager, it shows that it is using only 18.99MB. I don't know if that's a misprint on the manager, or if there is really that much difference.

Finally, I don't know if the stats banner you gave to me is being generated by your site, or someone else's, or if it matters. If so, thank you, and I want to know if you mind if I link to it on my personal webpage -- here -- at the bottom of the page. I tried storing the banner on my page (FTP'ed it to my host server), but the stats were static until I linked it to your page instead. If you object, I'll delete it. Actually, I don't think my page gets very many hits, so I don't think it's going to drain too much bandwidth from you. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks.

Missed that part of your message in my reply. I guess I just noticed what you had written below the quoted part. However, I'm still not following you, since I don't know that much about this intricate techie stuff. biggrin

Does it require any special software? More importantly, will it shorten the code for my sig file ... because I wanted to add one more piece to it, but even with a TinyURL link, it's still too long. I used paint to create a .gif file to stick right below your stat banner --
-- although I can't seem to get the color of the text to match. It would still look good though. Actually, that color sort of matches some of the color in the picture of the hops cone; I think it looks good when it's put together.

Edit: NEVER MIND re combining the above; I think I can fix it myself by combining three images into one new image. Duhhh ... I must have been half asleep. Anyway, one image will load faster than three, and it will be easy for other homebrewers to use it in their sigs if they want to. I should be able to fix it in a few minutes.

Thanks again.

Hi Bill,

I don't know anything about the stats sig thingies so I will leave that to VR - but regarding HD space with Boinc, the amount available doesn't have any effect on benchmarking, but may become relevant if you want to pre-store a load of units for when you are offline for a long period. The figure in Boinc Manager Manager is just what it is currently using - not the maximum available to it. You can adjust the maximum available by going to your default Boinc profile at My Grid>Device Manager>Device Profiles>Default Boinc Profile>Basic Options>Use no more than ...... Gigabytes>Save. I have it set at 10GB and have never had a problem.

Re: ATTENTION: HomeBrewers team members

Cor, you've been busy typing away Bill! laughing

First up the stat image is generated by the same place as your old one, from braindev.de.
Dont worry about the set up, if your team needs more let me know! wink

Ady may be able to confirm this, but going by your pc specs i think you should run BOINC on your pc and the UD agent on your sons. As BOINC seems to prefer the faster CPU's. smile

Oh, and if your pc works and does what you need it to then there is no a problem. wink

Unfortunatly i cant help you get that image in your sig, All i can suggest is that you shorten the text of your team link....

Ady speak the truth about BOINC..... smile

Hi Bill,

Sorry I didn't respond to this in my previous post, now regarding the RAM issue - unfortunately you will not be able to use your RAM in your son's PC, they use two different types:

You have PC2100 or PC2700 DDR RAM (184 pin DIMM) and your son has PC133 SDRAM (168 pin DIMM)

Also to be aware, the maximum amount of RAM your son's mobo will support is 512MB.

Personally I would keep yours on Boinc, and use UD on your son's PC adding RAM up to 512MB on it to boost the benchmarking.

I hope this helps, Ady smile

Thanks, Ady. I just set mine at 20GB since I have plenty of HD space. Here are a few follow up questions; that page also contains the following advanced options, with my current settings (comments and any questions are shown in angle brackets):

Processor Usage:
Project Weight: 100 <Does that means to use 100% of whatever CPU cyles are available??>
Do work while computer is in use? Yes <default>
Do work while computer is running on batteries? No <default>
Do work only after computer is idle for: 3.0 minutes <Is this similar to screen saver mode, and should it be set to zero if I want it to always use my excess CPU cycles? I don't know if the answer above (... while computer is in use?) overrides this.>
Switch between applications every: 60 minutes <I assume that means if I add other applications in addition to WCG, which I probably won't do.>
On multiprocessors, at most use: 4 processors <default and probably N/A for me with my system>
Disk and Memory Usage
Write to disk at most every: 60 seconds <default -- I'll leave that alone>
Leave applications in memory while preempted? No <The default is no, but it seems to me that these devices (both UD and BOINC) should be preempted every time I move my mouse or hit a key, right? Doesn't that create an awful lot of unnecessary writing and reading from disk? Does it hurt to set it to 'Yes' with only 128meg of RAM? (my son's comp; I'm not running BOINC on mine) ... and what about if I increase that RAM to 512?>
Leave at least: 5 Gigabytes of disk space free <changed from .1g default>
Use no more than: 75% of total disk space <default>
Use no more than: 75% of total virtual memory <default>
Network Usage -- <Are any of these setting necessary, since I'm connected constantly via DSL? I also assume that the max up/download rates being set to zero don't matter.>
Confirm before connecting to Internet? No <default>
Disconnect when done? No <default>
Connect to network about every .1 days <default
Maximum upload rate: 0.0 Kbytes/sec <default>
Maximum download rate: 0.0 Kbytes/sec <default>

I hope I haven't asked too many questions here.

Thanks.
