Re: Downtime warning

I don't think of WCG tasks as taking a long time my boinc weaning having been in the days when CPDN tasks could take three months or even six on a slow machine!

Re: Downtime warning

Indeed, this post is related to the upcoming outage.

The WCG outage is likely to start on Dec 7, too.
And what's the plan regarding sending out tasks? Will you stop sending out new tasks 2-3 days or so before the outage so most can be returned before you shut down the systems? What will happen with tasks on our machines during the outage? Will you extend the deadlines for them or will they be lost?

Re: Downtime warning

savas

Any update on temporary migration to another site during the construction/remodeling project at SHARCNET?

i.e., will WCG be active or offline during that remodel?

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Re: Downtime warning

The WCG shutdown date has been moved up from December 9th, 2024 to December 7th, 2024. We were informed by email on November 21st, to shutdown by December 9th because there would be no cooling by that date. Hosting earlier this week asked us to bump the date up to the 7th.
We have determined it is not feasible to migrate the BOINC infrastructure to another site during downtime, and we are still waiting to hear back from UHN personnel who manage our DNS records to see when we can switch the website and forums over to the alternate site. If we do hear back, this will take place between now and December 6th, 2024.
As users pointed out in the forums, it did not really make sense to start pushing new ARP1 workunits given the imminent downtime, and we will stop producing new MCM1 workunits tomorrow to hopefully give the bulk of outstanding workunits a chance to be uploaded. When we power down, after all traffic to the upload servers is stopped, deadlines for outstanding workunits will be extended to cover the downtime.
With the improvements to the cloud environment, we have been informed that the issue with the network agents in our cloud environment causing the website and forums database instance to become inaccessible on the network until hosting intervenes (cause of this past weekend's outage and many previous outages), will be fixed.

Re: Downtime warning

As been mentioned on the forum many times, it's a good idea to set a backup BOINC project with a 0 priority in the client. During the downtime, the client will automatically get work from the backup project, and new work will automatically be downloaded from WCG once it's back up.

It's also a good idea to bookmark the Jurisica Lab page here:
https://www.cs.toronto.edu/~juris/jlab/wcg.html
The Operational Status tab has updates.

Good luck with the infrastructure upgrade.

Re: Downtime warning

savas

Thanks for the further update and it appears that I was working on my message while you were updating the STATUS TAB. Since there is no time stamp on that update, I can only speculate.

I will process any WCG WU's as they appear. Since I have a zero queue, there is not much chance of WU's stalling here.
