Hi everyone, we would like to share a brief update from the tech team regarding the networking issues that we continue to face (original post).
Unfortunately, we have no specific timeline from the data center for a resolution to the networking issue, mainly due to staffing challenges and compounded by summer vacation schedules. However, reconfiguring our infrastructure and service deployments, along with iteratively reallocating any spare resources from elsewhere in the system has allowed us to send out more WUs to volunteers and stabilize the quantity and balance of WUs in the feeder to a large extent. While we continue to work at a lower capacity, we have identified an additional path to increasing our capacity by additional 10-20% as we await the fix by co-locating select services on our QA and build servers. As we configure the system to handle peak loads and prepare to deploy the resources that are blocked by the networking issue at the data center, we will continue to update you. With this issue on a path to resolution, we should now be able to address some of the concerns over statistics, credit, streaks, and database dumps which we have already begun to investigate. We will have a full article on the World Community Grid website soon discussing BOINC stats from our current testing phase and fixes to some of the known issues with the platform. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we finally get some momentum back behind the WCG. Have a great weekend! - WCG team |

Well, to be honest, this update feels a bit like a slap in the face for those that donate their resources to the WCG project(s).
----------------------------------------There have been 5 months from the announcement of the move until the shutdown for the actual transfer. That would have been 5 months to do a lot of planning for the actual transition. From the shutdown until the web site and forum came back up, there were 4 months. I can transfer a lot of data and operating environment in that time. And now WCG is for two months struggling to fix all the apparent bugs. a lot of which could have been already take care of in the previous 9 months. We are 3 weeks shy of the 1 year anniversary of the announcement of the move of WCG from IBM to Krembil. Somehow I have the feeling that we won't have much reason to celebrate. And it is not only networking issues, there has been no reaction what so ever about fixing the web site, and I seriously doubt that this is to be done by the same data center guys that are now on vacation the last two months.. So sorry if I am not that happy that in the last 24h we got a bunch of WUs send out way, when there still is the chance that all OUR efforts is for naught... Ralf |

I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that the 'data center' is not a part of Krembil and because of that there is no urgency at the 'data center'. Apparently IBM did not give them specs on the kind of network traffic that would be generated, or nobody at Krembil read them or supplied them to the 'data center'.

Thanks for the update Cyclops.
On my end, the amount of work I'm getting is much as it was before the switch. Hope all the points generated during testing end up reflected on my account, but if not, at least we can help the science again |
