Not that I'm not amongst the annoyed, but the flip side of this coin is projects that there's no communications for months or go into over a year both when things are down and when things are running but nobody knows WHAT they are crunching...
It would have been nice if they had support from IBM when they transitioned it. Maybe they don't want to bad mouth IBM...but IBM's not the only fish in the pond. There's companies big and small that they could potentially approach in exchange for well-placed branding on the website and press releases for the companies. XXX proudly a sponsorship of World Community Grid in research of COVID, Cancer, etc, etc... My 2 cents of thoughts. |

The project has been up for about a week now, but I am still unable to get any units to crunch. Is there a problem or will this resolve itself in time? Any estimates as to when the flow will smooth out so that all will be able to get units to crunch?

Any estimates as to when the flow will smooth out so that all will be able to get units to crunch? The project is NOT up. Only the website and the forum are up. WCG itself will restart "Soon". In Krembil-terms, this could mean at least another month before they start WCG itself up. |

Clarification:
The website and forums ARE part of WCG. It's the BOINC/work side that is not up. |

Actually, we don't know what the problems are. All we know is that the website is there but work is not yet available. There may or may not be a problem with the BOINC link. As BOINC is working for other projects, I assume that any problems lie with Krembil.

Hi Cyclops. What are the chances for WCG projects never resuming? For you: twice as long. +1 ^_^ Sorry DaveW and Yavanius if it seems that I've taken a punch on your holy cow, but the question is totally legit. In the past years I've invested thousands of euros on CPUs and GPUs and will sell the hardware, if there are indications that project will not resume. Indications, like a massive 2 month outage reserverd for transition, which is already missed by 100%. I dont really mind waiting "twice as long" (twice as long as what..? never?) Since I wont be doing crunching anyway at summer time. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by biini at Jun 30, 2022 1:22:30 PM] |

My preference would be that the communication be frequent or at least weekly. I am not complaining, but communication with the folks that are volunteering their CPU/GPU cycles would seem to be paramount. I realize that this has not been an easy transition, with the learning curve and all of the updates required, hardware to be put in place, transfer of data, testing, and bugs to resolve. I get it, but the progress should be regularly shared with the volunteers patiently awaiting the "Good to Go"! That would go a long way to enhance credibility and confidence, and relay good will to the folks that should feel that they are a part of this undertaking.
I salute your continued efforts in this monumental endeavor! |

Hey Biini
They have made guesses on start time before and didn't do so well with those, so I'm glad they haven't made a specific guess on when WUs will go back out. They have brought the website back up, and are actively working on fixing any issues with it. They hired a communications intern (cyclops). These are signs of a project that is working towards resuming and has hope that they can accomplish this. They have their own project in the mix, so they have a vested interest in bringing it back up. Enjoy working on other projects until this one is back. You can assess what projects are worthy your investment when it is back. |

See my post: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=673353 I too have thousands of $ CAD in hardware and had the same concerns. I understand people's frustrations -- in fact I share them. Several times in the past few months I've had to cool myself down and step away from the keyboard. But:
----------------------------------------Let's not brag about hardware stacks or talk about being invested. Volunteering is about giving, selflessly. Statements like this center the self and show entitlement. Let's also not start yelling or demanding things of the new comms person. Vent to your therapist or to a rubber duck, not at them. Their job is to distribute information, not to absorb abuse -- and they weren't around when any of these decisions were made anyway. P.S. the one technical detail that has been shared that made me go "ohhhhhh" and gave me some understanding of the issues the team has been dealing with was Websphere. It is a competent piece of sofware, but it is not fun to work with -- to the degree that if I were interviewing somewhere and they told me their stack was based on Websphere, I would likely start thinking about how to gracefully bring the meeting to a conclusion and step away. The Krembil peeps deserve some grace for having this... suddenly become their responsibility. [Edit 1 times, last edit by mdxi at Jun 30, 2022 3:48:28 PM] |
