Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Care to post some pic where ?

Just go to:

  • go to top right and click Settings
  • go on the left and click Device manager
  • click the profile to modify it, select custom and scroll down
  • find the Graphics section and the line "When displaying graphics, render at most"
  • select the desired number of frames (15 is a bit low, 30 is acceptable, 60 is best but taxing)
  • click save at the end

easy peasy!

These are the settings for the screensaver, not the GPU.

Lvova--If you are finding your computer unusable when running GPU tasks, there are several options:
--In "Computing Preferences" of the BOINC Manager, select "Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use"
--In your WCG device profile settings you can select "No" for the field "Do work on my graphics card while computer is in use?"
--You could also try freeing up some of your CPU threads if you are running CPU and GPU work concurrently.

As soon as you are no longer actively using the computer, it will switch over to GPU crunching with these settings.

Finally, if your GPU is powering your display, yes it is going to lag pretty much no matter what you do if you are trying to crunch GPU units and use the computer.

Sorry Uplinger, did not see your post. I will wait until you fix the issues. Good luck. Do not stress ;-)

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Assuming that we are already enrolled in World Community Grid and the GPUgrid, what do we have to do to be a part of the test?

I think GPUgrid is a separate project. If you managed to crunch gpu tasks on WGC before then you are all set and ready to go.

Ooop my bad. I must have changed that when some task ended and thought it made it to display more frames while crunching. I'm sorry

My solitary 960 is waiting... hope the server issues are dealt with soon.

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Based on how well this has been going, it seems to me the other projects should look at ways to also run on the GPUs! I think my GPU could handle two jobs at once and still have left over cycles.

Yes, but not all software is able to run on GPU's and not every research team has the capability to port their software onto OpenCL or CUDA.

So yeah, depends on the software and on whether or not each research team behind each project has the ability to port the software.

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

I'm sure those who knows how to trick BOINC into believing they have 100's of GPU's in their computers, and/or use a hacked BOINC version where the number of allowed tasks/computer is raised to ridicolous levels, will celebrate this decision for a GPU Stress Test. (Yes, it is possible to trick BOINC, and Yes, it exists hacked versions of BOINC that can do exactly that)

Let's see how easily they can fill their multi GPU computers with 10-20 thousand WU's, and once again game the system.

I am hoping that some of the changes I made on my end will prevent this from happening. It should be a mostly fair game of work units able to capture and run. We are resolving the filesystem issue now. This is why members are seeing the upload and download issues. Those servers are on my naughty list...

Root cause: I created WAY to many files for the filesystem...it was automatically working to increase the inodes and I had a lot of stress on the systems at that time...opps...

At this time, we have not started sending out the work.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

You probably already know this, but you can set the number of frames rendered by the card in the WCG settings.

Unfortunately, unless WCG is wildly different than every other BOINC project in the world, that setting affects the BOINC screensavers but not GPU apps themselves. The apps run full speed, no matter what you set here.

There *are* some GPU apps where you can control the GPU kernel size (and thus the screen lag), but usually you need to set that by using a command line parameter via app_config.xml.

The giveaway here is "frames rendered", which makes sense only in the context of drawing images on the screen. GPU apps don't do anything to the display, but that's 100% of what the screensavers do.

That would be a wonderful thing, uplinger.
