If they are sophisticated enough to build a botnet of any size, with the goal of harnessing as much cpu power as possible ... CPU power is not the goal of botnets. The goal is to get as many different IP addresses as possible, which makes it very difficult to counter DDOS attacks. CPU power is irrelevant for DDOS attacks. Granted, I had not thought about that possibility. Some botnets were created for mining purposes where both cpu and gpu power were the goal. Cheers

I have done that already since beta will open. but still, nothing received. Like others have said, BETA work units are very few and get distributed very quickly. So it is hard to get them. Probably the best way to get some is to check the forum's for BETA work announcements and try to get work at that time. A Windows XP computer connected to internet in 2020? At least put Linux on it! Just an FYI 20% of the worlds computers still use XP. It's only a cruncher so there is no need to change. It also has some legacy programs that I occasionally use. Computers like that are prime targets to be infected and used in botnets. Bad actors rent these out for all sorts of malicious activity like DDOS attacks, etc. Long story short, it is not a good idea to use obsolete operating systems... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botnet Your concern is unnecessary. I've been involved with computers since 1986, including building them, and I know how to protect against spyware, malware, viruses etc. no matter what the OS.
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

I have done that already since beta will open. but still, nothing received. Don't worry. The Beta WUs are not created for us batch hunters but for the techs to check if the WUs are running the correct way. There are only Beta WUs available, if they need them. Somethimes there are no new Beta WUs available for weeks. If I'm not wrong, there was a batch of 5'000 WU sent out. So a very little amount. If you selected Beta WU AND there are Beta WUs available AND your computer is requesting work at this short moment AND your computer has the correct spec. for this available WU then you could get it. Patience is the key here. |

I usually don't write stuff to forums but since I got involved in world community grid I got interested and began to read this forum, especially covid 19 section. I know this is probably an off-topic discussion in the thread but I want to clarify some facts. 1. The share of windows xp is less than 2%. Source: netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx 2. Windows xp programs can be used in newer versions of windows with compatibility modes. I know that a lot of computers in the industrial world are still using windows xp but those I have seen are not connected to the internet at all for obvious resons. 3. The first argument was that people are using windows xp connected to internet and at least put linux on it. I have seen a couple of linux servers connected to internet that are more unsecure than windows xp connected to internet. 4. Indeed, that botnets are been used worldwide for ddos but can be used as miners too. The recommendations are: * if you can upgrade your unsupported widows xp, do it. * if you can't/don't want to upgrade, isolate the network and don't connect them to the internet. //A security enthusiast guy |

Back to Beta tests:
----------------------------------------- 8 WUs only on Linux hosts, between a couple of minutes and about 9 hours computation time, all valid. Cheers, Yves --- PS: My unique Windows 7 x64 host did not fetch any Beta WU. |

I have done that already since beta will open. but still, nothing received. As others have said, they are very scarce. What typically happens is that a very small batch of beta units are released. These are normally all grabbed within a few minutes of being released. The techs/scientists then scrutinise the results of those (particularly any that fail). Then a second larger batch of a few thousand betas is released with any fixes identified from the first run. Again there is a pause afterwards whilst the results are reviewed for any problems. This can repeat a few more times if required. Once everyone is happy, they open the floodgates with a live project. You may see people with beta badges in the forums, but look at two things, first their join date, and second how much processing power/years of runtime is visible if they have a SNURK signature showing. Beta units used to be much more common than nowadays, as the WCG techs have gained experience in on-boarding projects, beta runs before projects go live have been shortened. |
