7 Day Deadlines for Test

Greetings,

For the next week+ we will be sending out FAH2 work units with a 7 day deadline. We have many questions from members in the past about this deadline. So, to show the difference, we will be running a 7 day deadline on all new work units sent out.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: 7 Day Deadlines for Test

This seems like wasted effort to me. Unless you plan to keep it at seven days, it will probably only create more confusion. It's been explained in detail many times and the project is moving along just fine as is. Wouldn't the effort be better spent on the storage issues or the "many moving parts" associated with the other 2 climate projects? Not to mention all the items on the so-called "todo list" that never get attended to.

Please don't do this.
FAH2 has been rocketing along.
Why slow down life-saving research to prove a point to a few folks on the internet?

Why not 48h deadline for test? Is this final set of FAH2 experiments or there is going to be more work after? Thx for update.

Re: 7 Day Deadlines for Test

I applaud the effort to try something different, but as I see it the benefits that could be obtained would come from wider participation. With only a limited supply of work units available and very little publicity for the change it's difficult to see how participation will grow.

I have expanded the number of FAHB slots open on my machines to the maximum for the duration of the test.

I have a hunch the throughput graphs will look like someone stepped on a garden hose somewhere. ;-)

So this test might produce some nice graphics to explain to people why the 24h turnaround is needed for this project.

In this 'study', could you also please look at the host distribution?

Re: 7 Day Deadlines for Test

Greetings,

My initial post was probably not worded wonderfully as I was trying to keep it short. But that caused more questions and comments then I expected, which is good. I will try to answer the questions with a more lengthy post.

With FAHB having a steady supply of work units available to run on the grid at one time, with work units that run in a pretty consistent average time due to generations. I wanted to run a test against our thinking of deadlines. Last time we did something like this was early on in World Community Grid, when work units were 8 hours on average and everyone was forced into single core. I have seen averages for other projects in the past but we also did not run 1 day deadlines either. So, this test is to gather more concrete data for future projects as well as FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2.

Other questions that weren't answered:
Is this final set of FAH2 experiments or there is going to be more work after?

From my understanding, we are expected to get more work from the project, as for a timing of that I do not know. Currently we have the capacity to run another experiment that is of reasonable size. So that would help increase the overall workunits in progress at one time.

Why not 48h deadline?
A majority of our projects use a 7 day deadline, so a direct comparison for the work units gives me the best data. I may attempt a 48 or 72 hour tests later to get more information, this has not been decided yet.

lavaflow, can you elaborate on the host distribution? Is this something where random loading of work needs to happen?

Thanks,
-Uplinger
