Looks like the WCG paused sending work out. After a couple days of nothing I just got 6 units.

Yes, for most of the past few weeks, I was getting enough FAH2 work units to keep 45 threads busy, since this change most of the time I only get a trickle.

Is the 5,000 workunits at a time still in effect? There may be a bunch of them considered active but sitting in queues now with the 7 day deadline, so more aren't being sent. Mine have about dried up, so I added enough FA@H2 for number of threads minus 1 on each type of computer and shortened the queues even more to improve turnaround. By the time I figure it out we will probably go back to the 24 hour ones. Those will take over the computer, so I only run about 1/3 of the threads so that other projects can get some time. The only projects with continuous work are MIP and MCM. I have passed 10 years on both and by 20 I hope something else is ready to run. Everything else is too sparse to fill up the threads.

My reading is, the randomization has not been implemented yet, meaning there's lots of hoovering if you know when the scheduled work release time is known. Before buffering up big was counter productive. Workunits would just expire soon after the 24 hour deadline. With 7 day deadline there isn't.
Despite the attempt at explaining by uplinger, frankly I'm still thoroughly puzzled why this is done on such a small WU data set to 'experiment' with this prolonged deadline. |

Greetings, I don't think that a 7 day deadline would be necessary. The vast majority of those WUs that I just got a "too late" result (or no reply) were a few hours over the 24h threshold. For all but a few outliers, which always can happen, a 48h deadline would be more than sufficient...For the next week+ we will be sending out FAH2 work units with a 7 day deadline. We have many questions from members in the past about this deadline. So, to show the difference, we will be running a 7 day deadline on all new work units sent out. Ralf PS: And right now, there seemed to be no WUs at all since some time yesterday... |

My understanding as well as Techs wanting to gather data part of the reason as to why the 7 day deadline was introduced was to show how much longer it would take for work units to get returned therefore sent out to other users because work units need to be returned before new generations can be created from the data from the previous generation.

People who are into FAH2 use computers good enough to complete tasks in 24h deadline, and they are pretty much 24/7 online, so that is not big issues concidering that one FAH2 task needs about 4-4,5h to complete on modern CPUs. Even less on newer generations.
Those who are into FAH2 just casual, they are welcome too, but they shouldn't complain about 24h deadline. As said before, if admins must satisfy wishes of everyone, maybe some extended period like 36-48h would be enough. If this 7d deadline experiment was introduced to gather some other data beside this, that's some other story. As for myself and most of other crunchers, we all got far less work since this extended deadline stared. |
