I live in West Texas where thanks to a deregulated electricity market in Texas, cheap natural gas as a byproduct of oil and gas drilling (a lot of it is flared off on-site because nat gas is so cheap) and recently massive solar and wind development...electricity is incredibly cheap. A non-issue.

I think it boils down to each individual and their assets. Some may question the use of assets for crunching or another specific item. The point is moot, my assets are like my money, I do with them what I please.
----------------------------------------Quoting "societal costs" for crunching doesn't apply. Do you ponder the societal cost of the money you by your food with? The money you spend on a hobby? Or to maintain your automobile? Crunchers who donate their assets aren't hurting society any more than a hobbyist of any other type, in fact they are helping to improve it by finding cures for diseases! I think you'd be better off calculating the societal impact of model rail roading, muscle cars, fishing, hunting or driving unnecessarily.
