Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

Hi! Even knowing that we are not sent less computing intensive work on lower-end devices, could it not be the case that the sheer variability in the tasks to compute over time might render aaabaaab's calculations inaccurate? Or is it the case that the tasks have very similar and stable computing times for the same computing power (in the same WCGrid's sub-project)?

By the way, @aaabaaab, what were the step-by-step procedures / formula you used for your calculations?
By active cooling you mean a dedicated cooling base (like the ones for laptop computers)?
Also, what were the settings in terms of the 60% or other CPU throttling and number of cores/threads being used?
And finally: is there no way to estimate the power consumption with software alone (Windows 10 or others)?

Thank you for your time!

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

By the way, @aaabaaab, what were the step-by-step procedures / formula you used for your calculations?

From the 'Results status' (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do) I've got the number of SCC WU that were crunched and then averaged the 'Elapsed Time (hours)' for each device. Computed theoretical processing time for each device.

For example for i7 4790:
- average time to complete a SCC wu: 1.33h
- CPU has 4 cores in HT: 192h/day of processing time
- it can complete: 192/1.33=143 SCC wu per day
- it consumes 2640Wh per day

thus it uses 18.5Wh to crunch 1 SCC wu

By active cooling you mean a dedicated cooling base (like the ones for laptop computers)?

active cooling for Odroid and RP3 - I use usb fans I got on ebay

something like these:https://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Pcs-USB-Power-5V-...82c715:g:mYEAAOSwebtbVY2z

not the optimal solution for the Odroids but better than nothing...

Also, what were the settings in terms of the 60% or other CPU throttling and number of cores/threads being used?

on all devices 100% cpu and 100% time settings

And finally: is there no way to estimate the power consumption with software alone (Windows 10 or others)?

I didn't look into this as I already had the watt-meter.

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

Thank you very much for the time you took in you detailed explanation! I think I'm not going to repeat those procedures right away, because I don't have a watt-meter yet and I don't want to buy one right away, but I'm certainly curious to calculate the values for my devices. I guess that could be one of my next gift requests (for either Christmas or Birthday). Thanks! :-D

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

It would be very interesting if WCGrid could show the average CPU time per WU over time. This would make matters even more fun, because we would be able to discuss with more accuracy how the average is a good enough indicator for testing the cost-efficiency of a device.

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

I got an idea! Perhaps knowing the charger Wattage and other settings CPUz could provide, there could be some kind of calculator that would show estimated consumption based on different device settings such as the #threads or CPU% used (useful both for efficiency matters on the side of the user and for the purpose of evaluating the cost of running WCGrid in terms of money spent on electricity by society). Do you think this could be achieved somehow?

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

Here is an interesting take on energy usage of computers. It may help to put some of this discussion in perspective. There are some sources listed in the video which may be helpful too.
EDIT:Link removed until I find a better one
The link did work at the time, but I think they removed the video. If I can find a new or better link I will do it. Sorry about that.
Cheers

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

You just linked to the main site, not a specific article.

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

Have any of the projects led to an actual result like a cure?

Re: WCGrid Cost-Benefit Analysis

I do not believe that a cost-benefit analysis makes sense in this context. It is not plausible to quantify or estimate the potential future socio-scientific benefits from the projects we work on. The data generated from our simulations here is stored and has the potential to be used long after the current research teams who manage these projects have moved on.

What might make sense is if projects that use the resources of WCG have to make the data created here open-source after, say, 5-10 years. This could be a negotiated contractual obligation between the researchers and WCG.

It already is a requirement that the research is contributed to the public domain
