Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

You cannot model a chaotic system. Well, you can, but you'd only be fooling yourself.

See Lorenz system

Of course you can model a chaotic system. The problem, with climate research, is getting the initial conditions. See the butterfly effect.

Cheers

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

6 months later without any movement in this forum, I ask:

IS THERE ANY NOTICE ABOUT WHEN THESE PROJECTS ARRIVE?

AND ABOUT WHAT PROJECTS WILL BE FINALLY?

Thank you

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

Hi PabloMalaga,

The call for research proposals we put out last summer generated more interest in the resources we were offering than we expected. Reviewing and rigorously vetting dozens of applications has therefore taken quite a bit longer than we planned. We are, however, in the final stages of the review process and hope to announce the grant winners in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Thanks,
Juan

Comedian Byron Allen Buys the Weather Channel for $300 Million

Comedian and producer Byron Allen acquired the Weather Channel TV network as he looks to expand his film and TV production company into a major media business.

Allen’s Entertainment Studios Inc. bought the network from Blackstone Group, Bain Capital and Comcast Corp., according to a statement Thursday. The price was approximately $300 million, according to a person familiar with the terms who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be identified. That’s a fraction of what the larger company sold for a decade ago.

The deal includes the famous cable TV network, but not online assets such as the website Weather.com and related mobile apps, which were acquired by International Business Machines Corp. in January 2016. In an interview on a day in which rain and snow blanketed much of the U.S., Allen said he was attracted to the reach and familiarity of the brand.

“Snowstorms, rain, mudslides, our lives and our families’ safety depend on this info,” Allen said. “When a big storm happens, it’s the Super Bowl of weather. As many as 30 million people watch.”

Allen’s company produces and syndicates TV shows and has released films, such as last year’s thriller “47 Meters Down.” It also owns Comedy.tv and Cars.tv, which are distributed online and through pay-TV providers.

Allen said he want to invest more in the Weather Channel, expanding both its international and local distribution. It’s part of a broader strategy to invest what he said would be billions of dollars in the media and entertainment industry.

The Comcast-Blackstone-Bain-led group had purchased the Weather Channel in 2008 for about $3.5 billion. A spokesman for Blackstone declined to comment.

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

Hi everyone,

We're thrilled to announce the three projects selected to receive IBM grants of computing power from World Community Grid, weather data from The Weather Company and data storage from IBM Cloud: climate.worldcommunitygrid.org.

Thanks everyone for your patience throughout this process! We'll keep you posted over the coming months as we work to onboard these projects onto World Community Grid.

Many thanks,
Juan

RE: Chaotic Systems
In a series of results reported in the journals Physical Review Letters and Chaos, scientists have used machine learning — the same computational technique behind recent successes in artificial intelligence — to predict the future evolution of chaotic systems out to stunningly distant horizons. The approach is being lauded by outside experts as groundbreaking and likely to find wide application.

“I find it really amazing how far into the future they predict” a system’s chaotic evolution, said Herbert Jaeger, a professor of computational science at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany.

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

Any expected date on when they will start testing the BETA version of the winning environmental projects?

And on the other hand

The list of environmental projects is closed or new environmental projects will enter in the future?

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

We are still in the early stages of onboarding the winning projects and therefore have no estimated timeframe of when we'd be releasing the beta version of each application.

The application cycle for this particular IBM grant opportunity (for environmental researchers to receive free computing power from World Community Grid, weather data from The Weather Company and cloud object storage from IBM Cloud) is currently closed. But scientists interested in World Community Grid can apply all year round.
