Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

Thanks for your comments.

Windows machines make up the majority of World Community Grid volunteer devices - we're keen to ensure the majority of our volunteers aren't excluded from participating in the project. Also, while the Linux build is performing well so far, there is additional testing we still need to do on Linux before we launch.

The project is our top priority and the tech team remains focused on launching as soon as we can! Thanks all for your continued patience.

An interesting statistic might be the number of results returned by OS over the past 3 to 5 years. When using volunteer devices, are those only active devices or ALL devices defined? I had a lot of Windows devices in the beginning but have only one small Windows 7 machine the last 5 years. Could be a very misleading statistic

The research application for the project is very large in scale and wasn't built to run on Windows machines. In the process of porting the code to Windows, which is a significant undertaking

I wish there was a WCG understatement of the year award. This would qualify. laughing laughing

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

Thanks Juan for your regular updates. I'm sure it's frustrating for you and your fellow techs to be coming up (and hopefully solving) all the issues you've found so far - and I'm sure that you'll be launching the first of these new Climate Change and Environmental Research projects as soon as you can.

I can also feel the pent up frustration from many of my fellow crunchers - as 2018 was the first year since WCG launched it's very first project in 2004, when a new science didn't come into being. Hopefully, 2019 will be the fifth year in when at least three new projects are successfully launched.

Will the Linux app launch before the windows app is ready? It's been done before.

Maybe they could make it a VirtualBox application

We're making good progress with Windows, so while we wouldn't have ruled out the option of launching Linux first, we're hopeful that we won't need to.

Re: We're Ready to Support Climate Change and Environmental Research

I just want to say that I'm really excited to hear about the new climate change project! I mostly contributed to Clean Energy Phase 2, but since that project finished I have gone from running WCG on as many as 5 computers (it might even have been 6 at one point?) to just 1. (Its a 2004 single core laptop that now serves as a glorified alarm clock while running BOINC/WCG on the side. It's easy for me since I use it for about 20 seconds a day, 5 days a week to turn off my alarm, and it runs 24/7. It may be slow, but it chugs along!) As soon as the climate change project starts, I will definitely start running it on my other computers that have (significantly) more computing power.)

Also, I want to give a shout-out/thank you to the admins for providing what seems to be pretty consistent updates on this. One thing I have always said about scenarios like this is that it's really important from a participant's point of view to consistently hear from the people working on the projects. Even if the progress update is just saying "we're still working on it" or something similar, it is much better than hearing nothing at all. The people at WCG seem to be pretty good about doing that though.

Also, just out of curiosity, do any of the climate change projects have any potential at all to be run on a GPU?
