Dear volunteers,
----------------------------------------We've supported a number of environment-related projects over the years, thanks to the enthusiastic involvement of many volunteers. Now we're pleased to announce a new partnership with The Weather Channel (an IBM business) and IBM Cloud to support climate change and environmental research. Scientists around the world are invited to submit proposals to receive grants of supercomputing power, meteorological data, and cloud storage to support their work. You can read more about this initiative here . Please feel free to comment and ask questions in this thread, and we ask you to stay on topic. Thanks for your support! Thank you, Erika. A most interesting development. I wonder if there is any chance of working with the scientists at the UK-based Climateprediction.net ?
----------------------------------------It has been around for a number of years but suffers from chronic infrastructure issues. I would think there is quite a lot of synergy here.

What's the state of the solar panels at that certain address at Penn.Ave? See https://understandsolar.com/white-house-solar-panels/
----------------------------------------Edit: Whilst the idea of CPDN being hosted here is interesting and Myles Allen maybe having an ear out on this, in my days of crunching there caused major job losses... the only way to recover going to a BOINC backup to get weeks/moths of crunching back, but that required major surgery, and would because it affect the client_state.xml file. No idea how the backup/restore of these very long running jobs work these days. Query to WCG on "pleased to announce a new partnership with The Weather Company (an IBM business) and IBM Cloud to provide free technology and data for environmental and climate change projects." Is the premise here to use the TMC data for these 'sponsored' projects? [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Jul 11, 2017 12:44:30 PM] |

We welcome applications from any environmental or climate change researcher, anywhere in the world as long as they meet the project criteria and grant eligibility (see FAQs section here ).
And SekeRob, yes, the idea is that the free weather data and cloud storage would be used to support the research project running on World Community Grid. Many thanks for your continued support, Juan |

Would be nice if some GPU capable project would come out of it ... the performance would be much higher (the initial development effort though too)

Great news, am all up for this. Please support work on GPU as well.

Whether a project is GPU enabled largely depends on whether the research application selected by the scientists for the project is already GPU enabled. If not, the scientists would weigh the effort of porting to GPU against the expected gains (sometimes only part of the algorithms can be accelerated with GPU, which may not significantly impact the overall efficiency or speed of the project). Either way, we would be happy to support a GPU project.
Thanks, Juan |

Great!! It would be good to get a big climate project running, or maybe two. Just to breakup the monotony of biochemistry if nothing else.
