I'm with you enels.

How many crunchers will support this? I run cpdn tasks including testing which doesn't get me any credits anywhere when Linux tasks are available. I have also run climate@home tasks. Should WCG start running climate models as well, will this just divide the crunchers who want to run these tasks or will it bring a significant number of new crunchers into climate work?
Not sure if I know what the answer to that is but do think it a question worth posing. |

I'm not going to waste electricity on 'researching' a chaotic system. It is your money and your machine, crunch what ever makes sense to you. Chaotic systems do have limits and can be modeled. Trying to model the entire earth system with the myriad of variables available would be an exercise in futility as there is not enough computer power for that. As far as climate, we do not yet know what part of the climate they might like to work on. Let's see what they are proposing before a judgement is made. Cheers

Actually a Dutch institution is doing the 'global' modelling daily, and is deemed to be the best in closely predicting for instance how hurricanes will move. Fortunately for the world, Twump can not defund this science effort, an opinion on the USes found here: http://mashable.com/2017/09/14/hurricane-irma...t-models-gfs-vs-european/

Fortunately for the world, Twump can not defund this science effort, an opinion on the USes found here: http://mashable.com/2017/09/14/hurricane-irma...t-models-gfs-vs-european/ As noted there, the European models forecast hurricane Sandy more accurately in 2012 also. They predicted that it would hook inland, instead of staying out to sea, several days before the U.S. models did. At the time, I thought it was probably because W. had under-funded weather research. But I can make a prediction too: If some storm takes out Mar-a-Lago, the U.S. funding will increase dramatically. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Oct 13, 2017 6:03:15 PM] |

I read several years back that the ECWFM outperformed the GFS on a regular basis. Updating the GFS hasn't been a big priority in the US. I hope we get some glacier or ice sheet modeling projects or high res CO2 or methane modeling.

I wish them well. Cheers

I'm really hoping that WCG can somehow work with the existing climate prediction project. Would be super nice.
----------------------------------------I'm all for helping out with climate prediction and the like - I think recent events have made it pretty clear and what better way to do that than harnessing even more computing power. Here's hoping something comes along soon! Keep crunching :)

You cannot model a chaotic system. Well, you can, but you'd only be fooling yourself.
