65 watt TDP for an 8 core/16 thread processor isn't too bad. I wonder how it'll stack up against the current Intels.

65 watt TDP for an 8 core/16 thread processor isn't too bad. I wonder how it'll stack up against the current Intels. I'm on a quad-core 65 watt TDP APU so I think it's great :D They have some Cinebench results in the article. I don't care about those but it doesn't look bad at all. ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 2 times, last edit by Falconet at Feb 22, 2017 8:45:04 PM] |

I'm going to have to ponder the following...
Already have a desktop running an Intel 6950x - non water cooled, just fans, lots of fans. I got to briefly see a laptop running the new ryzen, but didn't get a close enough look at it - as to which version it was, or even if it had a goodie-item such as a 4k screen. Either way I'll be getting one the first day it comes out, and all of the nightmares with the early adoption program. It will be interesting to see if the ryzen will outdo my liquid cooled laptop? Or should I wait a few brief months to purchase a laptop with the Intel 10 core? |

I've been reading LOTS about zen(ry) for months now.
----------------------------------------I'm ASSUMING the X in the names means overclocking available, similar to the K in Intels. If so the extra 100 bucks is for .2 ghz, I'll just overclock the 1700x Been running an I7 2600K at 4.2 ghz for 5 years now (liquid cooled) Before I jump in though, wondering if anyone has seen the server chip prices. they are going to 32 cores (64 w HT). Even if that was around 3 ghz, or even 2.5 that's a LOT of WCG Crunching! ![]() |

Overclocking will be dependent upon a few factors.
Mainly items such as the motherboard. But as many computer hardware computer professionals have been clearly told by the manufacturer... It could/will also depend upon other factors such as levels of cooling - possibly even mandating water cooling with a lot of added fans if one wants to overclock for any period of time - stress on the word ANY. |

The ability to overclock one therefore depends on the motherboard chipset. AM4 motherboards have five different chipsets: A320 (basic budget boards), A300 (same as A320 but specifically miniITX), B350 (mid-range, multiplier-unlocked, other system tuning limited), X370 (top-end boards, multiplier-unlocked and full tuning available), and X300 (same as X370 but specifically miniITX). The "X" in the CPU names designates whether or not XFR (eXtended Frequency Range) is enabled, which allows the CPU to sense the thermal environment it's in and automatically adjust its frequency, even beyond the base frequency (basically auto-overclocking; time will tell how effective this is). No "X" = no XFR. X-series chips also run at a higher 95W TDP and are just generally binned higher than their non-X counterparts, which will likely result in a better overclocking experience. As for Naples, we have very little official information about those as of yet, but Dr. Su of AMD said they're supposed to be coming in Q2 of this year. The only frequencies I can find on that (unnamed) SKU come from here: http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-naples-server-cpu-vega-gpu-platform/ The chip only has a base clock of 1.4GHz, but it turbos respectably to 2.8GHz, presumably on a single core. I have no idea what kinds of frequencies we would see on an all-core load like WCG, but I'm interested to find out, as well as to see if any ES's show up on eBay once they're released. ![]() ![]() Crunchers: 1: Xeon E5-2695 v3 @ 2.5GHz turbo (14C/28T) 2: Xeon E5-2658 v3 @ 2.3GHz turbo (12C/24T) 3: Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.675GHz OC (8C/16T) 4: Core i7-4700MQ @ 3.2GHz cTDP up (4C/8T) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Kasey Domer at Feb 28, 2017 1:54:23 AM] |

That site tends to post a lot of rumors rather than facts. Also, they tend to steal pictures and not credit them. Also, a 100% OC from 1.4 to 2.8 sounds REALLY fishy to me.
