Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Has anyone, or know of anyone, who has tried Mint 18.1 on the Ryzen?

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

@Paul_D... sorry to hear about all the problems you're having with your 1700X. I've been wanting to build a Ryzen rig purely for WCG as well. Would you mind sharing what config you're using?

- Motherboard make/model?
- Windows version or *nix?
- XFR on or off?
- VCore, Load Line Calibration settings?
- Any improvement with SMT on/off?
- Perhaps re-seating / re-applying the thermal paste on the H60?
- Is the H60 pump working? (use HWMonitor etc to see the pump rpm)

There have been reports that some motherboards have screws a bit too long to have a good fit with the heat sink. There could be some problems with the fit of this particular combination.

Somewhere saw a question if Mint 18.1 supported Ryzen... well if it got Kernel 4.10 it does: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3176323/linux/...r-zen-multithreading.html

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Here is an article about reported Temperature of these new chips. For the 1700x and 1800x. AMD is adding 20C to the measured temperature. So if you have one of these chips and want your real temperature just subtract 20C.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Ryzen 5 will be out April 11, in four SKUs:

R5 1400 - $169
4C/8T, 3.2GHz base, 3.4GHz boost, 50MHz XFR, 65W TDP

R5 1500X - $189
4C/8T, 3.5GHz base, 3.7GHz boost, 100MHz XFR, 95W TDP

R5 1600 - $219
6C/12T, 3.2GHz base, 3.6GHz boost, 50MHz XFR, 65W TDP

R5 1600X - $249
6C/12T, 3.6GHz base, 4.0GHz boost, 100MHz XFR, 95W TDP

All chips are unlocked, and I assume that the non-X variants will come with Wraith cooler. Pair these with a B350 mobo for moderate OC'ing and you've got yourself an awesome cruncher for relatively little money compared to, say, a 6800K and X99 board (or even a 7700K/7600K/6700K/6600K with a Z170/Z270 board).
----------------------------------------

Crunchers:

1: Xeon E5-2695 v3 @ 2.5GHz turbo (14C/28T)
2: Xeon E5-2658 v3 @ 2.3GHz turbo (12C/24T)
3: Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.675GHz OC (8C/16T)
4: Core i7-4700MQ @ 3.2GHz cTDP up (4C/8T)

I read on HardOCP that all models except the 1600X will come with a Wraith cooler - but it will be the 65W Wraith Stealth instead of the 95W Wraith Spire that comes with the 1700. The Stealth also lacks RGB lighting if that matters...

Given that Ryzen 5 has less cores, I was hoping for higher clockspeeds than the Ryzen 7. It can't close the gap with Intel for gaming at these levels, but the 6 core 1600/1600X will still be great for WCG.

Hi, apologies for taking a while to reply, i've been tinkering/swearing/shouting at retailers & manufacturers, but i'll answer as much as I can
Motherboard is an Asus Prime B350M-A, it's a Micro ATX which wouldn't have been my first choice but at the time it was the only board I could get my hands on and the five year old in my head just wanted to get up and running.

I'm running Windows 10 home which again i'd rather rip my arm off than do, if it wasn't for gaming and specifically there not being a linux version of Lord of the Rings Online I wouldn't touch windows with a bargepole.

XFR on or off? hmm I might be thick but I don't see that anywhere in the BIOS setup of my board but in all honesty overclocking the thing really isn't on the agenda - yet - more details of that later.

Vcore and load line are all set to auto, I'm not clued up enough to start messing with things like that, running the 5-Way optimisation of the Asus AI Suite it tells me I can run my CPU at 3.975 Ghz but trying that for any length of time just causes the machine to shutdown due to high thermals.

Haven't played with SMT, my main goal was to just get the thing to run at 3.8Ghz and be able to run boinc at 100% like all my other boxes do.

Tried re-seating the pump, even tried a noctua cooler which looks nice and is quieter but gives the same temps.

Being able to touch the heatpipes right next to the CPU and have them feel quite cool was a big giveaway that something wasn't reporting right and the lo and behold as stevemtu pointed out AMD have now said it reports 20Celcius higher than actual, if anyone can explain to me why that's a good idea then please let me know - I'm struggling with that one.

I do have some progress to report from earlier though, initially the retailer that sold me the board wasn't really interested and just directed me to Asus - for five points guess what they said? yep, you probably guessed it, they told me the retailer was responsible for warranty issues, to which they said it's not a warranty issue it's working so it's a technical issue, talk to Asus. Upshot of that was me ringing Asus from the retailers showroom and shouting at both them and the retailer and asking them to kindly sort this irksome annoyance out pretty please, although as I probably don't have to point out, it didn't quite come out like that, but anyhoo they gave me a new motherboard probably just to get rid of me blushing .

So as of right now I have a system running at the right speed and at 100% load within Boinc, Asus AI Suite is reporting 78Celcius on the CPU and 31Celcius on the motherboard and it's been like that now for around 24 hours, the capacitors around the CPU socket are untouchably hot still but I have a cunning plan to fix some heatsinks to them with thermal pads then fix some copper plates into the grooves of the heatsinks and blast them with a fan (or two) in an attempt to get some of the heat out of the motherboard, it gets so hot that the side panel of the case with a 2cm air gap feels hot and short of putting the whole machine in a freezer I can't think of another way to cool it down. If I can get the temperature of those down I might overclock the thing.

Ultimately I'm cautiously happy at the moment, it's running (all be it stinking hot) but I get the impression it could expire due to heat any second - only time will tell, after a couple more days of solid running i'll give a heads up on what kind of Boinc numbers it's doing.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Thank you for this extensive report and I am sorry for you that you have to suffer such "commercial relationship" troubles; having a reliable reseller available is still a challenge.
The temperature problem of the electronic (capacitors) results from the water cooling. The airflow around the CPU is missing if you watercool the CPU. You have to ensure a better (enforced) airflow around the CPU electronic, in particular the CPU power supply capacitors, otherwise they will not remain healthy for a long time.
Regarding the 20°C offset on the CPU temperature: AMD mentioned that they try to anticipate possible dynamic hotspots in case of rapid load changes. The offset is defined to force a higher CPU cooling in order to avoid "pro-actively" some possible hotspots. It would be better to communicate clearly this "specificity" prior the customers would be afraid ... Now, we are aware about it.
I hope you will enjoy your Ryzen based system, on my side, I will probably plan to move in this direction in a couple of months.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

@Paul_D.. given the 20 degree offset on the 1700X, a reading of 78 degrees would be 58 degrees actual. To be honest that's quite a good result! Even without overclocking, my 2600K + H80 watercooler already gives a reading of around 71 degrees.

Did you flash the BIOS to the latest version? The shutdown at 3.975GHz is probably induced by the motherboard to protect the processor, not due to system instability. May be worth checking if there is a setting in the BIOS to adjust the temperature at which auto-shutdown occurs. You may also want to manually set the voltage to ensure "Auto" isn't using some crazy high levels. The only other solution would be to replace the H60 with a H100/H110 with higher cooling capacity.

Having said that, many moons ago I built a rig using a Asus mATX Z87 motherboard and a 2500K. It was overclocked running Prime95 24/7, after about a year there was a loud pop followed by a burning smell - a capacitor had blown. To run full load 24/7 overclocks, it's more sustainable on boards like the Asus X370 Pro. The VRM design is a lot more robust - not just the heatsinks, but also has more phases. Though I also do understand you had no choice due to the limited availability of the boards.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

How are you finding your new Ryzen system now that you have it working? Are you getting decent results with it? I am wanting to get one, and am waiting for someone to actually give some feedback on its performance.
