Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Well right now if you're considering Ryzen let me give you one big tip - don't and let me tell you why.

First up is frequency, in the end I bought a 1700x, the one that turbos to 3.8Ghz - except it won't, it refuses to go past 3.7Ghz which might not sound like the end of the world but if I wanted to run at 3.7Ghz I'd have saved £70 and bought a 1700.

Stability, I bought a Corsair h60 closed loop water cooler to keep the temperature down, sat looking at a utility program with the cpu coolers fan and pump both flat out at 100% and Boinc using no more than 70% processor it's sat at 70/71 celcius, if I push it 100% usage same as all my other machines it leaps to 74 celcius then bombs the system.

So i'm looking at a system that can only run at 70% which might have a dodgy cooler - or not, or a motherboard that simply can't cope or some other random issue that's making the system bomb out. I'm guessing it won't give Boinc performance much above a 6 year old 3930 system that runs rock solid at 100% 24/7 if it even manages to equal it at all.

Right now I wish I'd gone with my initial plan to get a 6 core Haswell system, right now I feel like throwingt this one in a skip.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Paul D,

Are there any updates for your motherboard?
In the few days before the launch, several BIOS updates were released.

- AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W
- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W
- AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Hi Falconet according to the Asus suite it's up to date, for now I've just left it limping along running at 70% and tomorrow I'm going to talk to the retailer and see if they'll take the bits back and how much I stand to lose.

Have lost all patience with it to be honest but I appreciate you trying to help.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Well, to me it must either be a BIOS issue (or the motherboard itself) yet to be resolved or something with the cooler.

Hope you can solve the problem!

First 24 hours scored a monumental 25,768 points so about a third of one of my 6700K setups with 5 pages of results pending validation

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Do NOT be an early adopter for Ryzen without expecting major issues. Almost half of all of the builds out there so far have encountered issues; not with the processor chip, but mostly on items such as the motherboard. This is due to the fact that AMD did not give the motherboard companies enough time to develop

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Do you know that for a fact? Haven't seen many legitimate complaints outside of this thread about Ryzen. Surely if it was half we'd all be hearing about it more.

We need a larger sample size on WCG to pass judgement. Anyone else recently complete a Ryzen rig and have comments about their build, performance, and output numbers?

Just a few from a quick search, Ryzen is not all sunshine and smiles and as someone who has parted with the cash I know this only too well

Edited for bad speeling - see what I did there?

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Link 2 seems to be a BIOS issue.
Link 3 is a Kernel issue, all that needsto be done is update the Kernel (obviously older kernels won't properly support Zen)
Link 4 also a software issue?

We will need to wait a few months for the issues to be solved, most specifically, those regarding AMD software and BIOS. I think they should have delayed the launch until the motherboard BIOS were working properly. And for the motherboard manufacturers to build up stock since there's almost no AM4 MB's for sale...

Keep checking for BIOS updates if you still have the Ryzen and can't return it.

Re: AMD (Ry)Zen has launched

Usually, the launch of a new CPU architecture is really demanding for all the players: motherboard manufacturers, BIOS editors, OS kernel.
I would not expect to be able to have an accurate RyZen support - in particular regarding reliability and performance - until a couple of months; it is absolutely normal.
On my side, even if I am very interested to test this new CPU and platform, I try to be patient. Probably end of 2017'Q2 (earliest) would be appropriate for a serious try.
Cheers,
Yves
