@tonyh205 - re using app_config I know about the app_config facility but haven't set it up on most machines because I haven't crunched CEP2 for quite a while. ... How do you find the "short names" of all WCG sciences, and especially the name of the next betas, in advance? @Rickjb, I don't know of a way of learning beta names for certain in advance, but CEP2 betas have always been beta11 in my memory, and others have tended to be incrementing - HSTB beta22, Zika beta23 - so a guess might work ![]() |

Hello, Getting errors on uploading.

@Uplinger - re. your comment on being on weekend standby via your phone: true dedication to the cause - appreciated! I got 1 resend as a result of the 1st 2 wingmen being awarded "No reply". Should I abort it or let it run? Have suspended it 10h in, pending further developments at WCG or Harvard. What should those of us who've received such resends do? Crunching them counts towards upgrading badges (whoopee!) but won't advance the science, so our CPU time would be better spent doing other work. Yes, quite. I'm in danger of getting my "gold" beta award for crunching a load of CEP2 WUs to 18 hours which checkpointed 2 hours in and then not again, so therefore discarded 16 of the 18 hours. Add to that, that they're 32-bit binaries in an almost entirely 64-bit computing world. Far from being "clean", this is by far and away the "dirtiest" WCG project I've participated in in terms of profligately wasted CPU cycles and associated energy consumption that could have done useful work for other projects - and earned higher badges on them too. The increased energy use of my server when crunching for WCG is about 1 watt per core per hour, which is 16 watt-hours wasted per WU across 30 or so CEP2 beta WUs, so approaching half a kilowatt-hour, and I understand the beta has only just started! ![]() ![]() |

How to piss off WCG CEP beta testers... courtesy of Harvard
----------------------------------------1. Create a download server inadequate for the task 2. Pick a holiday weekend for a large number of US States 3. Start a beta just before this weekend 4. Don't bother monitoring how well its going 5. Allow the 4 day turnaround time to expire, people cannot download work etc. 6. Don't provide any information of any attempt to recover the situation 7. Continue to ignore requests to do something about the 18 hour limit It's been days now since my first upload failure and still it fails... latest "Error reported by file upload server: Server is out of disk space" Seems like common-sense is becoming increasingly uncommon... not happy

I'm seeing the same here, aside from the error, mine continues to be a "transient upload" error. I have 20 ready to upload and all are set to expire in 6 hours. It is unfortunate.

Very irritating indeed!
----------------------------------------Multiple task ready to transfer but fails. A lot a valuable crunching time wasted. A bit of a blow in the face to find status No reply in result status page. ![]()

It is unfortunate what's more unfortunate, is the lack of communication (an apology would be nice - but I'm certainly not holding my breath for that). At one point, CEP2 was extremely good at communicating - an example for all the other projects to aspire to, but that certainly can't be said of it/the scientists behind the project now-a-days. ![]() |

No new updates from the techs? Still getting "server is out of disk space" messages (at least until 3PM Eastern time, when it goes to a nice shiny No Reply...) My wingman got theirs in before the server took a dump, so theirs is sitting in PV status.

How do you find the "short names" of all WCG sciences, and especially the name of the next betas, in advance? Fishing them out of client_state.xml looks tricky since there are zillions of <name> entries in there, while the alternative of setting <sched_op_debug> is only going to work after the first beta has started. Open client_state.xml. Click edit, then find. Type beta into the search box then hit "find next". Keep hitting find next until you find the CEP2 beta app. Took me 3 times of find next to find out CEP2 was beta 11. You can use the same procedure to find any short name for any app running on BOINC.
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Alternate, navigate in file explorer to the WCG project folder, and browse... you'll see all the available shortnames (convention always in lower case), to then be aghast again of the poor housekeeping BOINC does on past and present, which reveals also the CEP2 beta11 series has been going since February of this year:
