I usually do not activate UEFI and I rely on mainboard BIOS.
----------------------------------------Normally - since other 20 years - I use only ASUS mainboards. The rare time I have to handle MB from another supplier, I did experience a little bit more problems. For compatibility and support reasons, as far as possible, I prefer ATI/AMD graphic processor or I rely on the on-board Intel graphic processor. Especially for Linux support, ATI/AMD is better (but I am not a gamer). NVidia can cause some troubles on Linux because of the poor (and closed specifications) drivers provided by NVidia. Anyway, as soon as your host is installed and running well, you should not experience (kernel) update troubles; otherwise you can ask for help. Enjoy your new cruncher system, Yves |

Actually, there's big works on NVidia driver for Linux ongoing and NVidia themselves are working with Canonical on that.
----------------------------------------W10 build 14905 is just arriving as critical networking parts and Settings perpetually crashing in the AU1607 and 14901, not to speak of loss of LAN/homegroup accessibility. You get some stupid, yes stupid advice by an MVP the create a new homegroup to then delete it again to get your old homegroup going again. This gunk is just not stable... booting takes 3x longer under W10 then it did on W7/W8 on same devices. (The number of background processes that W10 runs (invading privacy) is endless... some you cant even disable like 'Basic' system telemetry feedback to MS (it's a requirement as they print it). Oh dear, the EFF also discovered what I just wrote about
http://betanews.com/2016/08/17/eff-microsoft-and-windows-10/ Microsoft has tried to explain this lack of choice by saying that Windows Update won’t function properly on copies of the operating system with telemetry reporting turned to its lowest level. In other words, Microsoft is claiming that giving ordinary users more privacy by letting them turn telemetry reporting down to its lowest level would risk their security since they would no longer get security updates. Just that you know. |

Does the torture never stop? NO, not with MS products: http://borncity.com/win/2016/08/12/ie-11-secu...causing-issues/#more-1248 IE11 comes with Windows 10, and it had to be, because Desktop Office depends on the IE engine, albeit an older version and the web based Office does so too. (It took me many hours of recoding, and even more days of testing before I got the Supplemental Charts to run again, quasi, as certain VBA code under W10 rubbished some memory segments that holds the declared variants. So I'm running the chart scripts 1 by 1 instead of serial, where it somewhere looses the plot, ending up with an unsave-able workbook after execution) (So funny SAP recommends to upgrade to W10... OFL) @SekeRob Why don't you move to Linux? You invested so much effort over the years, it is a pity to have to struggle again and again at each new windows version (and now at each new update) because of this unreliable OS. Cheers, Yves The 'closest' to Office 365 is Open/Libre Office, and 'closest' than being a euphemism, as the quality of graphics and malleability, just has no comparison. At any rate, deep-revisit of something added to the Read Later list (Firefox add-on) at http://www.excelforum.com/l/924477-asdf.html letting the words sink in and the epiphany hit... a library had not ported, that in fact became redundant for this custom application. It was still referenced, which is where all the computation and corruption stemmed from. Unticked the particular .dll requirement, and voilà , back in action, workbook saving again after the long script execution. Now I can fetch my second morning while executing. (BTW Windows 10, Anniversary Update was re-issued on August 16 with build 14393.82, was 14393.67... rerun your update install and watch the screen and boots for the next couple of hours... some anniversary )Insider build 14905 still has a completely borged Setting module... nothing much of configuration is possible, all exiting out within seconds (They know a lock dll is missing, they say so in the addendum, and still they released the build). Homegroup, 'what homegroup' is the question now. ![]() Edit: and don't try posting special characters such as in voilà on this forum... 10 years on with this forum gunk and they still get corrupted on first post. |

If basic (supposed) minimal tracking is not low enough, work through this http://www.technicalnotes.org/how-to-disable-...-microsoft-in-windows-10/ In the end, it was the powershell commands that did it for me.
When visiting managed services, and you see diagnotics entries, mine dropped from 5 to 3 lines. And in case you wonder about not finding 'Diagnostics Tracking Service', see the last reply... it was renamed to 'Connected User Experience and Telemetry'. Mine is now showing as disabled, and the machine is still running fine, and crunching efficiency improved with that, except for the crashing setting modules. Now how broken is Windows 10: It says in the instruction you have to boot after completion, so went to start and hit the power icon... nothing in options appeared, no Sleep, No Restart, No Hibernate, No Power Off. Typing this is the Cortana frame, got the reply (have your sock-upholders in place) "Sorry but the power options are currently not available, wait until the next windows update". Used the hardboot power switch which is set to reboot on short push, after which Restart commenced. It feels like they're trying to apply a lobotomy on already stupid customers, the Nurse Ratched way ![]() |

After 24 hours on and some powershell and registry hacking (Allow Telemetry key editing), can say that things seem to be returning to pre W10 (W7/W8) performance level on one device (The other will get same treatment if things stay stable). Anyway, from the horses mouth https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/win...nts-to-microsoft-services and keep the bag from the frontseat pocket handy,
You can configure telemetry at the Security level, turn off Windows Defender telemetry and MSRT reporting, and turn off all other connections to Microsoft services as described in this article to prevent Windows from sending any data to Microsoft. We strongly recommend against this, as this data helps us deliver a secure, reliable, and more delightful personalized experience. Boils down to "if you don't give us your data, we don't know what to defend you against" blackmail/coercion, for the lesser hands-on.A very good reason, to do messaging, mailing etc with non-MS products such as Thunderbird and FireFox who I hope see less interception of what I read and visit. |

In case your Skype webcam calls or webcam in general ceased to function, MS switch it off for something called YUY2 encoding(?), affecting millions upon millions of unsuspecting AU upgraders. Read this article https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/7...ows-10-anniversary-update with several hacks including setting a single key in the registry with regedit.

Just to confirm, I've fully broken (LoL), the Feedback Telemetry send back to MS, by using the various tips from previous posts/links in this thread, so much so that the Feedback hub has a red text complaint in it, that informs that no feedback is possible unless allowing diagnostics data to be send back and need to change it before I can. The settings screen then shows the 'Basics' box to be grayed out, and red text saying group policy is in effect (Think Pro and Enterprise has that build in, but my home version hasn't... Registry hacking gives though access to the same settings).
Anyway, to remind you what W10 is transmitting back to Redmond AT THE MINIMUM(and in a way it's sickening) Basic sends data that is vital to the operation of Windows. It helps keep Windows and apps secure, up to date, and running properly by letting Microsoft know the capabilities of your device, what is installed, and whether Windows is operating correctly. Basic includes basic error reporting back to Microsoft. Basic data consists of: Configuration data, including the manufacturer of your device, model, number of processors, display size and resolution, date, region and language settings, and other data about the capabilities of the device. The software (including drivers and firmware supplied by device manufacturers), installed on the device. Performance and reliability data, such as which programs are launched on a device, how long they run, how quickly they respond to input, how many problems are experienced with an app or device, and how quickly information is sent or received over a network connection. Network and connection data, such as the device's IP address, number of network connections in use, and data about the networks you connect to, such as mobile networks, Bluetooth, and identifiers (BSSID and SSID), connection requirements and speed of Wi-Fi networks you connect to. Other hardware devices connected to the device. Yes all your internal networking configuration and identification data is going as well. Google got slapped for collecting Wifi data in a sneak way by driving around for their maps collection, but this seems to be OK (until those no good EU politicians in Bruxelles wake up). |

Hi SekeRob,
----------------------------------------I'm very sorry for you and all Win10 users for all the unacceptable troubles you have to experience and survive since about 1 year. You are absolutely correct: but this seems to be OK (until those no good EU politicians in Bruxelles wake up). I would only like to add that "Bruxelles" reflects opinion, decision, and willingness of each national member state government and politician. Indeed, my feeling is that those are more motivated to fight against some "supposed-to-be" copyright infringements that significant negative impact on European companies and citizen because of inappropriate product behavior. VW engine emission scandal is peanuts comparing to the world wide impact of W10 on company operation and data privacy. Cheers, Yves |

The effect of W10 on the unprepared user (don't ever be unsuspecting :-))))):
---------------------------------------- http://betanews.com/2016/08/19/unwanted-windows-10-apps-return/ I'm using 2 special fonts, one of them aharoni, only this one keeps being uninstalled (deleted), which then causes fallback to some system default, messing up the graphics layouts. Now I keep a copy in the work folder, just right click and hit install and things are normal, till next update. Switching off tracking, (or on to give some hearty feedback) I've now turned into an art-form... a little powershell script to turn off and turn on 2 of these 'services'. They've been set to manual, and one triggering the second, i.e. boot does not restart them. Guess MS will make sure that next time they're back to 'automatic' again. For sure, the efficiency on the desktop is getting close to the aimed 99%. [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Aug 22, 2016 8:47:24 AM] |
