Re: Windows 10

Not so vise to let an OS what reached end of life out on Internet.
Nevertheless an IT Infrastructure could be robust by design. I have no problem to operate an "obsolete" operating system as long as the machine and the infrastructure is well secured.
M$ do not seem to understand that some industrial applications could not be upgraded simply because M$ says to do it. The industry timescale is more focused on decades than on years.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Windows 10

Just in case, lose 26GB of occupied disk-space after the W10 Anniversary update: http://betanews.com/2016/08/03/free-up-hard-d...ws-10-anniversary-update/

And a point of warning... there the 30 day roll-back where you can still go back to W8 or W7... only do this if you're so sure:
A word of warning however, these files are used to roll back your system to a previous installation of Windows and removing them takes away that option. If, however, you intend to stick with Windows 10 (and remember, the Anniversary Update is mandatory), they serve little use and so can be cleared out without problem.

Lol, MS changed the roll-back to previous OS from 30 days to 10, and sure enough the W7 recovery disappeared from the options. As for recovering 26GB, I'll top that with just running clean disk and being told there are 'Previous Windows installation(s)', 44.7GB worth, on the go my multiboot being RIPped as well. The stupidity being then being told 'If you clean up the previous Windows installations or temp installation files, you will no longer be able to restore the machine back to the previous version of Windows angry Is there any helping these I£$%s?

Re: Windows 10

XP is still being patched and it's quite easy to get your home copy to get onto that patch cycle. Can't remember if I posted about this here before... Search forums or consult Google.

I have a very, very, very, very, very good reason. I like it and it's just as secure as any windoze OS if you know what you're doing. It also runs GPUGrid much better than any other windoze OS. If that makes me look selfish in your eyes,*yawn* couldn't care less. Since I'm typing this on XP maybe you better go hide your computer. And FWIW 99%+ of the updates/patches for any windoze OS are pretty much useless for the casual user. I turned updates off on all of the W7 machines I occasionally run after SP1 and have never had a single issue of any kind.

Re: Windows 10

XP is rock solid, nothing wrong with it. We upgraded some hardware that attaches to our archiving stations a couple years ago, and it came with 7 pro on it. I have had nothing but problems running that software on 7 ever since with the archivers (even though the software company claims full support of 7 and up). Unfortunately I can't get XP to install on the new hardware, can't find drivers from Dell. If I can find some older computers laying around that can still run XP, I am going back. Granted, these stations are completely offline, not even attached to an internal network, let alone the interwebs.
Plus, I miss XP. It was just such a nice OS :)

Re: Windows 10

Has anyone who was/is on W10-1511 (build 10586) actually received the 1607-14393 anniversary update or notice there off? So far the one machine has zero sign, just receiving several patches for 10586.

(So far the finger print reader has kept working, whereas under W7 it would always stop after a few days uptime... one single plus so far cool )

Re: Windows 10

I have applied the Anniversary Update (AU) manually on one machine as an experiment. In Settings / Windows Update, hitting "Learn more" under "Looking for information about the latest updates?" takes you to a page of info about and links for all Win10 updates including the AU.

The AU has not appeared for me in Windows Update automatically yet.

Re: Windows 10

OFL, clicked the Learn More, and was told that I don't have permission (to learn more). If as admin/user/installer I have no rights, who has?

The other system with insider version actaully opened up a web page to say W10 AU was available.

laughing

Edit: After applying more 1511 patches it does run though... complete opaqueness is the MS trademark.

Re: Windows 10

I have not seen the AU on my one 10 machine. I was under the impression that the update would roll out fairly quickly, but manually checking for updates would force it to update (not in my case). Figured it would show up eventually. I will try tonys suggestion this evening.
