Don't know why it's a problem...Win10 is a nice OS!

I've just upgraded my main workhorse PC from Win7 to Win10. It's quite elderly - 2009 vintage - but I'm pleased with the result. All hardware and software still works, some of the software being very old (Sam Spade, anyone?). I did do a massive reorganisation of the Start Screen, unpinning most of the default apps and replacing them with shortcuts to all the software I use frequently, in sensible groups. The File Explorer Quick Access section has picked up all the folders I had pinned in Win7, which is neat.
In parallel, I updated BOINC from 7.2.47 to 7.6.22. During all these upgrades, I had all BOINC run activity suspended, but afterwards the workunits resumed as if nothing had happened, and all have turned Valid. Efficiency remains >98% and that's with lots of other stuff running. I was interested to note that the Result Log for units that started under BOINC 7.2.47 but completed under 7.6.22 give <core_client_version> 7.6.22 at the start of the log. The OS details in the Workunit Status for recent results have changed to Win10 as expected, but I was surprised to see that it now says Win10 for all listed results, even a couple of Beta HST from a month ago that are still listed, i.e. results that ran and completed under Win 7 now say Win 10. I hope that effect isn't skewing anyone's statistics too much .Overall, a pleasing outcome. |

Why store OS data for each result when you can do with an index key Device #1234567 = Windows 10... i.e. it's retroactive, and the device xml export just states the cumulative as done by your active OS. BOINCStats is warped all the time by this and other changes such as changing team ;?

Saw that MS promised to remove the GWX.exe nagware message -after- July 29, the date the 1 year free upgrade is ending. Given that the W8.1 and W7 give 99.4+% efficiency, I've yet to attain on W10, think I'll just pass and wait for whatever W11 is going to bring [though somewhere somehow it was indicated the W10 may be the end of the line]
Funny is, the nagware still indicates 110 million installs though on the intertubes they're bragging of 200+ million (pushed down the throat). From W7, Out. |

To my personal taste, Linux is more service intensive... I've had more machines becoming unstable requiring reboots or complete resetting wayyyy more often. I cannot agree with this statement. - Like all my hosts, Linux hosts do not update automatically. - Linux requires a reboot mostly only after a kernel update. - By using LTS version only (Ubuntu, Linux Mint), I did never experience instability. Against Win 10: - Lack of control (e.g. automated update) - User telemetry and weak data privacy - Win7 Pro is still OK (just moved to 4 resp. 2 years ago) Because of MS disrespectful (and buggy ) behavior to its users and customers, since 10 months, I froze the rare Win 7 configuration I still operate (no update). In the future, Win 7 systems will be only VM I will use for Office purpose only (compatibility with my customers). I am with KerSamson on this one. I have two Win 10 machine and two Ubuntu 14.04 LTS maschines. The Linux is rocksolid and it should be as it is also an server os and not only a desktop os as Win 10 is.
Keep the LTS-versions (long term service) on Ubuntu and dont jump on the bandwagon and update to next LTS-version first thing then it release and you get rocksolid performance, well atleast I get that. |

If you have the issue [moi] recommends Windows 10 users to upgrade their BOINC to the just released 7.6.33 version. This one takes care of a shutdown/signout issue, where BOINC does not get the time to process the exit procedure, Windows 10 would kill the running tasks and BOINC would start new ones in the meantime.
----------------------------------------64 bit: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.6.33_windows_x86_64.exe 32 bit: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.6.33_windows_intelx86.exe There's also Vbox versions of these. Edit: Add mail excerpt Howdy Folks, A new version of BOINC is available to test out on Windows. The bug fixes in this release are: * client: Check for a new process initialization error code when the user session is being logged off. * client: fix memory accounting for VM apps * client: in mem_usage_debug msgs, show whether the job is running * client: Add <no_opencl/> option in cc_config.xml * client: fix nvidia_driver_version dlopen() (Mac and Linux only) Please report any bugs to boinc_alpha@ssl.berkeley.edu. I am upgrading to Win10 tomorrow and I was wondering If you had any tips on How to do the Upgrade on BOIC? I actually have downloaded the update to 7.6.33. Do I have to Exit out of BOIC and run the .exe file then restart BOIC by rebooting the system? Thanks, Ann

Before you do, exit BOINC and move a copy of the ProgramData\BOINC folder to for instance C:\BOINC
Why? In one case all ProgramData content got erased by the W10 Installer. When (re)installing BOINC (Uninstall+Install) point the program under the advanced options to the new location. Hope you still can get W10 gratis... it's the 30th here now. |
