Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

So given that FAAH is running down, why don't some of you Senior Cruncher "100 year" and "Sapphire" people back down and let us little folk make some Gold and Emerald badges? wink OK, really, just do your stuff and move the project along! We'll catch-up later.

According to the WCG staff, it wouldn't matter. The feeder is going to make sure the same allocation of units get sent out. So, when they said 4 to 5 days left of WU's, even if heavy crunchers left, it would still be 4 to 5 days.

Ever saw the message in the queue that there are no available work for the projects you have selected and then shortly thereafter you get new work? The feeder didn't have any work for you as it wasn't going to get more as it needed to get rid of work for other projects first to keep the allocation in check.

So it appears that no matter what you do, it doesn't matter.

YES it would...it would postpone project END by day or 2, I'm sure about it!

- especially when some don't have selected If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project.
- especially when some people it will become a 2nd project
- especially 'cause BOINC server is not updated sec 2 sec, or even min 2 min...
wink

it would be a nice test if TOP 10 contributes just sign off FA@h...to C what would happen with science data & would BOINC server be able to "compensate" in 5d or less time!
cool

Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

I am getting so sick of people talking about "need x more days for badge y".
Don't you know how SELFISH this is?! The goal of WCG is to solve important problems in medicine, science and other fields, not to give you the chance to earn a bunch of shiny and totally useless trinkets!
I am crunching on MCM and FAAH even though I have no chance of getting another badge in either - but I don't care, because I know that COMPLETING THE PROJECT is the most important thing!

If you have to boast about this garbage, do it in the Badge Recognition topics. But leave the rest of the forum out of it!

Sorry about being real blunt, but I am so fed up with this, I'm beginning to wish there weren't any badges at all.

Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

Hanibal94, let me explain my very personal point of view on the hunt for badges.
In spring this year this project was surprisingly close to the end. Beyond the fact that I'm helping to solve problems in medicine, deseases, and many more it is an additional motivation for me to reach some badges. And believe me in the diamond range they are hard to achieve as the distances are getting huge. For fight aids I had a goal for a certain badge but the project was so close to finish and it seemed to be out of reach.
So I decided to rent 4 servers (12 cores each) to reach my badge goal. I wouldn't have rented them if there were no badges and I wouldn't have bought my two amd and all the android devices, too.
Yes, I made it to the badge but who was the real winner in this case?
Fight Aids! Because I doubled my resources.
And if I wouldn't have made it to the badge? Then I would have taken it as a real sportsman: It would have been a race that I've lost. So what.

But the science is always the winner.

By the way I could quit these servers on a monthly base. But did I quit them?
No! They are still active and processing different projects on wcg solely. So my hunt for badges has a very positive effect on WCG!

In other words: No badges would save me a lot of money every month. And to give you an idea of the amount I'm talking about: it is far beyond 200€ every month.
All for the price of an useless badge or two or some more...

Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

Hanibal94,
My wife does fund raising for a large non-profit organization that does charitable work. Every year they publish a high gloss magazine that lists every donor grouped by the amount of money they gave the previous year. The donors are very happy to see their names in there and the really big donors are featured in the front. Most large non-profits do the same thing because it provides very good motivation for the donors. This is what WCG is doing here with badges. The members give CPU cycles which WCG publicly acknowledges with badges. There is nothing nefarious about this and the donors shouldn't be considered "selfish" because of it. Its all for a good cause and everyone considers the recognition as secondary.

if you are so sure, put some money on it. Let's say there are four projects and all have an equal weight. The feeder gets 200 WU's; so it gets 50 from each project. You have the heavy crunchers remove one project from their profile. They grab all 50 WU's from the three other projects, leaving the 50 from the project that they no longer have selected. A few people get some WU's, the heavy crunchers come back and ask for more WU's. The feeder has nothing to give them since it still has some WU's left from the original request where it got 50 from each project. So until that other project WU's has been depleted, it will not ask for more WU's for all projects.

So, Uplinger also said that they only way to complete a project faster is to add more processing power.

So, by adding more processing power, you are helping all projects even if you only have one selected. Others that have all projects or the send me work for other projects if not work is available box selected will just see less WU's for that particular project. So, it doesn't matter what project or projects you have selected. If there are 4 to 5 days left of work, it doesn't matter if people opt out of that project or not, it will still run dry in the 4 to 5 day mark. The feeder will make sure of that. So if people need more time to reach their goal, the only way would to to remove processing power. So KLiK, going to turn your machines off?

That's only half true...
Presently the Diamond badge maxes out at 100, but I have 192.5 years already on the FA@H project and will soon hit 200. Could WCG please add the Diamond 200 badge, hopefully at least a few minutes before I actually hit the 200 year mark?
We have added this to 'the list'!

Thanks,

Here's the Badge Information page (with no mention of the Diamond 200 badge):

There should always be a "next badge" to reach for. At present I have no "next badge", since Diamond 100 is the largest (and I passed that point more than 96 crunching years ago!) And certainly there must be others (user deltavee is an example) who have also passed the Diamond 100 point and now have no "next badge" to reach for. Also, ErikaT promised to do it, and it's been six months now.

Surely it can't be that hard to add Diamond 200 (and Diamond 500, while you're at it), and then update the text of the Badge Information page accordingly. It probably requires either adding two entries to a data table or adding less than ten lines of code. And it would restore the integrity of the Badge system.
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=498283

So here we are, 7-1/2 months later, past 198 years now, not talking & still no "next badge"... angry

Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

Alright, I guess some people do like the badges, and some even increase their processing power just to get badges, like Eric Kaiser. Seems like badges do have their use.

But what I still don't like is how some people have been asking others to quit this project or that one "so that other people can get their badges". I hate that and I will NEVER do such a thing, because I only care about completing these projects to help make the world a better place, and I would crunch for WCG even if there were no badges at all. Fame is nothing, science is everything.

I just wish badge-lovers would stick to the Badge Recognition threads and leave the rest of the forum out of this. When I click on a topic called "Estimated Completion Date", I expect to see status reports and updates on the project, not a bunch of boasting about "I only have 10 days till I get my diamond badge!!!".

"Boasting"? Actually the truth is that most of us are having fun while we dedicate our self funded crunchers to the cause. Others, it seems, should buy larger size underwear.

OK, I'm willing to bet in my Presario Multipad2 duo...got anything else u wanna bet into? wink

But to do that, we have to:
1. make an ECD in FA@h or MCM till completion
2. ask TOP10 crunchers to give up that project
3. see if it makes "any difference" & by that I mean it will be +1d more on completion time!

R u up to it?
What do u offer?
cool

p.s. I've been selected off FA@h & got NONE of WUs (except for Androids) on my PCs...even though I've been selected option to opt in other science data if no (OET & UGM) is available! so I'm pretty sure about my projections...selecting off projects will postpone ECD!
But getting my 100+GF or 20+d OFF of 96y which FA@h project makes will be like 1/1752 or 0.0006 down on completion time...

So, Uplinger also said that they only way to complete a project faster is to add more processing power.

about getting more people on WCG is a topic here:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,38424
so don't go OFF TOPIC here! wink

NO, I'm not going turning OFF my machines...just abandoned all PCs on FA@h!
cool

most of us put money into projects, either by servers allocation or by building up small servers... wink

what u like about a food or badges is not important!
as long as there r enough food or badges to go around...& data to crunch...so if I (or any other) turn my 100+GF grid off FA@h so that others can have more for themselves...that makes me a:
1. generous person
2. not self obsessed
3. worthy cruncher to go for another project
there is also MCM to finish soon...& then u want to, can have OET to crunch on...or even CEP2, despite the some controversies around it's science, here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,38423

well, I don't know where you come from, but rest of us who r coming from a "democratic & free society" is used to express it's own opinion & have your attitudes towards sthg...so we can talk about it here all we want, as long as we don't hurt other people or be rude to somebody!
if u don't like it - don't read this topic...if's a FREE WORLD man!
