Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Tracfone has Alcatel Android phones for free sometimes. You just have to buy a $15 prepaid 30 day service with it.

These are only $10US and work very well, for a quad core phone. I have 8 of them now. I have removed the batteries and powered direct off the 5v usb.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I'm not joneill003 but I'm also running a bunch of XU4Q's with Noctura fans on them.

Running SCC with an occasional Zika I average 63-64 results returned per day and 14.300-14,400 points per day for each XU4.

I set the big cores to 1.9GHz max and the little cores are 1.4GHz max.
Core temps are 75-82C.

Yep I am getting anywhere from 55-65 results per day, depending on when stuff gets uploaded/validated. Mine run at 1.9/1.4 as well, but my temps hover in the mid to upper 60s C according to CPU-Z. I have mine in a largish box with two 120mm fans in a push/pull design to blow air over them. Overkill, I know. But it keeps them nice n cool cool
Edit: I noticed that mine would start to throttle the cpu clocks around 80C. I run larger heatsinks with noctua 5v fans.

I did a test on power consumption of them as well, and while I don't remember what the results were, it is posted somewhere several posts back in either this thread or another android thread. It was very efficient on power.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Is there a way to monitor boinc on Android without actually picking up the phone itself?

What do folks use for active cooling - especially with regards to internal batteries?

I don't have the know-how to do anything fancy - but am debating grabbing a few cheap-ish android tablets with internal batteries. It's runtime at least.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

I remote into a few of them with Team Viewer. I tried one of the VNC options in the past which worked but I switched to my TV account so I didn't have to open up my firewall. However, I now have too many devices to manage and find it just as easy to pick them up. I only really look at them maybe once a week.

Cooling, I don't keep them in a single room currently. So, heat from my servers don't affect them all.
1. Winter months you should utilize the window seals as cool air naturally radiates from them.
2. In my bedroom, I always have a box fan running because I'm hot blooded and my wife wants the noise when she sleeps. I will have about 8 or so phones in front of it.
3. Phones that run without batteries are less of a heat concern. If you can find one that will run without it plugged in, do so. Others you might be able to get away with soldering. I've done it with an Alcatel One Touch phone in the past. (3 of those actually)
4. Turn the screens off as you don't need those on while crunching. The device will draw less power with it off and therefore less heat.

Re: Best bang-for-the-buck Android device

Hi,
I'm blind here, so soldering won't be something I'll be remotely comfortable with.
I'm up in Canada, so I'll give the windows a try since it's well below freezing out right now.

Is there a theoretical safe temperature for the battery if the phone is going to be used? Boinc has it set to 40 C but should I go cooler if I want long term usage?

thank you
