Quieter

I've been fiddling around with the fan settings in my BIOS, trying to determine at what speeds the two case fans and the CPU fan get "annoying". In my my case, the definition of "annoying" is slightly above barely audible. By a scientific process of trial and error, I've made a big difference. My phone is saying 10-11dB with the machine crunching flat out, compared to 9-10dB when it's idle. Put it this way, the ticking clock is louder.

In essence, I reduced my peak CPU fan to 90% (unless it gets stupidly hot) and compensated by increasing the case fans. The end result is that it's sitting there at 86C after a couple of hours flat out, about 3C up on what is was before, but still well below the 95C limit and significantly quieter. It will be interesting to see what happens on Friday, when 30C is forecast.

Re: Quieter

Mamajuanauk, what's the output show if you do the following from the command line (obviously redact/mask anything personal out from the results):

# boinccmd --get_project_status

all sorts, but I've sussed the problem today...

I'm playing with my Raspberry Pi, the problem appears to be that there is no work available for the Pi/Ubuntu combination...
I ran through all the current projects and still received no work for the Pi/Ubuntu combo.
Yet my other pi running an old version of raspian works fine...

Thanks for all the input guys...

The next build project will be...

It's a small world indeed Tom1987. Why don't you join Team UK? It's free, and you can have a nice signature graphic (after 7 days) which you can use anywhere smile

You're making me so jealous, I was targeting 50db for that Apollo R2600 server but only got to 64db and haven't run it for a week. Running it a bit today whilst taking photo's for the Ebay ad. - it's days are numbered! Big heatsinks or water are the way to go, 1U and 2U rack servers are nonsense with today's power hungry CPU's.

How did the high temps go at the end of the week?

It hit 90°C on Friday afternoon, which is a bit close to the limit. Mind you, I think that was only about 10° above ambient, by the feel of it!

It should be fine with this Friday's 35deg then, might be worth keeping one eye on it though. wink
