Re: New Project

Found this racing frame, would be good for starting out on.
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Arozzi-Velocit%C3%...KAXCQEXPS536Q3XC&th=1

That does look pretty useful, plus looks like it's compatible with my office chair too (I assume it just needs the type where the wheels push into the 5-point frame with big push-studs (for want of a better description)? If so, that'd be fine.

Additionally, it looks like the Logitech G29 I've been looking at is cheaper on Amazon than it is at my usual computer-supplies place (by a considerable margin).

I'm now very much tempted to grab both! biggrin

The issue I'd potentially have would be which games my existing gaming-PC (the CPU and motherboard are 10 years old now, although the GPU has been swapped out for newer a few times) would actually support, might be wiser for me to try those out before splashing out £400-something on a frame/wheel/pedal set.

Re: Covid 19 plus side

Thargor, perhaps try DMNI's sim on steam first to make sure the PC's up to it. Perhaps a 3900X excuse? biggrin Although I'm not a massive Steam fan after it stopped working with Civ5 crying

Here's DMNI's post, the youtube vid had me very tempted, I've just got so much on at the moment with work.

I may be 55 but my inner kid is good and strong. I watched a GT Sim Race with some of my favourite racing drivers taking part, and it looked amazing fun.
So, I splashed out on a Logitech G29 force feedback steering wheel, pedals and gear changer £199.99 at Argos, Gear changer was free after adding it. Bought Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition from Steam, currently 50% off, and hit the track.
After 2 days of crashing, and causing general mayhem. I settled down, stopped crashing Lamborghinis. Ferraris, and other top end cars at every corner, hopped into an Abarth 500 and started to figure out the subtleties of sim racing.
I have to say my lap times started to drop at an amazing rate and I'm now pushing the wee Abarth to its limits, and learning a couple of my favourite tracks.

Why not! Got loads of free time! Here is a link to my first serious attempt at learning, and you can see me get better and faster. I'm much faster and consistent since making that.
I reckon in about 3 months I will be within the 107% rule every lap, and will try an online race.

Re: Covid 19 plus side

I'd probably work up with something free, before splashing out on Assetto (although I'd definitely like to play that at some point).

Something like RaceRoom Racing Experience, which is free (and a little lower on the minimum-spec required). Watched a Twitch stream of someone racing in it, yesterday, and it looked pretty decent-quality still. Plus, if it doesn't work very smoothly with my PC, I've not lost out anything (except the time taken to download it via Steam).

The trouble with component-upgrading is my PC is at the point where replacing the CPU would mean a motherboard replacement which, in turn, would mean a RAM replacement. Getting very close to a full rebuild, at this point, and I do still have long-term plans for a new-build PC with VR-support (but wanted to put it off until I'd moved house, whenever that ends up being).

Re: Covid 19 plus side

Assetto Corsa Ultimate Edition is a very fine sim, though it lacks some of my favourite cars and tracks. If you want to do proper sim racing online, then you need to buy Assetto Corsa Competizione with the International GT3 pack, but it is not necessary unless you reach a very high skill level.
I also have Project Cars 2 which has more tracks and cars, it is very good also but Assetto Corsa is more acurate of a simulation in my opinion. You can do online racing on both games and both have their own racing championships.

Re: Covid 19 plus side

By the way, If you do try it out, don't get disheartened if you can't seem to turn corners without sliding of the track, you will figure it out.
I thought that going around corners felt far too slow, time seemed to slow down and it would take ages before you can floor it, you will get used to it and everything will fall into place.

I practised going around a specific corner until I figured out just how fast I can drive around it without tyres squealing, and aimed to hit the corner at that speed everytime. This gave me room for error and kept me on the track.

It's the graphics card that mine might fall down on, from the recommended spec, as I'm running an older GTX 670. However, additionally, although my Processor is a quad-core Intel (technically), it's also one of the ancient original ones from around 2008 (mk1 i7-920, quad-core 2.66GHz).

Am downloading RaceRoom Racing Experience overnight, so will give that a try tomorrow - that will give me some idea of whether my PC would cope with the step-up to something like Assetto Corsa...

Let us know how you get on Thargor.

Here is my new lap record in an MX5 Cup car, was 3 seconds faster.
You can see how much I have improved.

Re: Covid 19 plus side

Loads of new badges for lots of people in the past week, not surprisingly. The team has already run up 10 million points on OPN. Let's hope we can make a difference.

Re: Covid 19 plus side

OPD is now the project our team is doing the most off. Personally I'd be doing WCG even if it did not have badges etc, that stuff is just gravy.

Thargor, I tried RaceRoom Racing Experience, and found the tracks to be a lot tighter than they should be, I also was driving a car that should have stuck to the track like glue and it went off with no steering control at a very low speed. Could be just some setting adjustments required, which I will try later today. You also do not get many cars and tracks for free, still good to be able to try it out.
