... It's Hobson's choice, but this will not work since we are here on a voluntary base.

Since most native English speaking [Those from the US and England of course ;P], would not be knowing what Hobson's choice is [but a native German speaker does for good measure], here a wiki link to explain this with some history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobson%27s_choice ... now that was a fun moment on a weekend day. :D

P.S. The Italian statistic is no better than it is for the English. 80%+ does not know how to spell or construct a grammatically correct sentence. Ich werde mich nicht äußern über Deutsch ;)

Oh well, for the incommunicado, maybe it's [this and next week case] of a Star Trek Voyager typical 'away team' complement, meaning that all of the bridge staff has beamed away: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/WorkShop13 . The Romulans can unobstructed charge their disruptors now ;P

Just a pity that it's limited to researchers, scientists and developers with significant experience or interest in BOINC. Input from Volunteers who use the system doesn't matter. sad

Re: NEW Projects?

What I find disappointing, going back to my original reason for posting, and with respect and gratitude to all those who have taken more of their time to comment is that despite all this, no one from WCG has actually jumped in and explained anything. At least I don't think they have. I don't count the guy from IBM, sorry and all that but by your own admission your not in the WCG team.

So what a missed opportunity for someone, anyone, who is actually in the WCG project to step in and tell us what they are doing, or more to the point aren't doing... The answer to the latter point is keeping the restless workers happy. They are failing miserably IMHO.

Let's talk about the green credentials of WCG, but in another post...

Re: NEW Projects?

Well, after being away for my "summer holidays", I was rather hoping that there would have been news of a new Beta - but, alas, no news what-so-ever...

Oh well, sad

Re: NEW Projects?

Let's talk about the green credentials of WCG, but in another post...

Hi sicsystems,
what are you doing here?
What is your final intention?

I can understand the meaning of your first message. As you can see, several people took the opportunity to provide answers and comments.
However your comment about "how green is WCG?" gives the feeling that you are more focused on demotivating WCG contributors than to try to improve WCG fame and participation.

Each time, people do something, they are increasing the world entropy and at the same time they maybe have a negative impact on the environment.
It is clear that, if you contribute to WCG, E-power consumption is higher than if you don't.
The real question is: by similar computation power/results, is the environmental impact of a grid - like WCG - better or worst than the impact of a data center?
Honestly, I don't know !

You mentioned that you destroyed your laptop with WCG. I am sorry for you, but laptops are not really sized and regularly cleaned by the user for supporting 100% CPU load over days, weeks, and months.
If you plan to use a laptop, you should limit the CPU load, there are options and tools for doing this.

Nevertheless, may I ask you how often you renew your smart phone?
The environmental impact of smartphone production is probably much higher than contributing to WCG.
Replacing healthy smartphones only for buying the newest model has a significantly negative impact on the environment.

If you decide not to support and not to adhere anymore to WCG objectives, we will understand that you prefer to leave and we thank you for your contribution. If you decide to continue to participate, please think a little bit more positive. Discouraging other members is not valuable and useful.

Yves

Re: NEW Projects?

There's plenty of work at the following projects:

CEP 2
Folding @ home
Rosetta @ home
Malaria Control
GPUGrid
Simap
POEM @ home

I will crunch the new HCC as soon as a Beta appears, but until then my machines are busy........

Re: NEW Projects?

My cores are being kept busy 24/7, and we have been told that there will be other projects very soon.

I'm staying here. It is the best place to be IMO.

Re: NEW Projects?

Tech query:

What is the best CPU for CEP2? Is there a breakdown of hosts running this project? What is the optimal hardware combo?

The inverse of that query: if I have a given CPU, for what projects is it best suited? Is there a chart which offers such guidance?

Thanks
