Re: NEW Projects?

Hello everybody,
Yes, there is a long loud silence. From the little I knew, I would have expected a beta test to begin around late August to mid-September. As we all know, that didn't happen. I expect that means some poor suffering programmer trying to debug alpha code deserves our sympathy. What else can I say?

Please post all your posts containing hugs and kisses in this thread.

Interesting, but we are watching people jumping out, mainly ones which believe reach enough effort in the actives projects. Unfortunately the "forever intermitents" that we have, don't contribute to help on that in anyway... As we all know, urgent new and consistents projects (challenges) will be key to keep the interest of people in WCG.

Re: NEW Projects?

. . .
Now, what would be useful for ALL of us, would be to understand how a project starts at WCG: who starts it, who approaches who, etc. That would be interesting to know and would answer a lot of the forum's questions.

Hello cjslman and gomeyer,

Go to Research, look at the section titled "Submit Research" and click on "Learn More" ( https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewSubmitAProposal.do ). This takes you to the page titled "Submit a Proposal". It talks about submitting a proposed project but all the interesting details are in the 2 documents that you can download by clicking on "World Community Grid RFP Process" (250 kb) and "RFP Proposal Application" (215 kb). If you can get a scientist you know to fill out the RFP Proposal Application and email it in, he has taken the first step.

Re: NEW Projects?

Hi guys,
I understand the frustration of some members.
I understand the big challenge scientists have to manage until (and after) the release of a new project.
Research is a long and non-monotone way; often consisting of a couple of forward steps immediately followed by some backward steps.
Research work is not really comparable to engineering work, it is pretty impossible to define (and to meet) fix deadline and schedule.

Nevertheless, we can make some communication improvements without saying too much and without consuming too much time.
We can imagine - based on a clear definition of the different stages required until the release of a new project - to have a graphical representation of the current achievement of each required stage/step. This graphical representation should allow to spring back to a previous step if the results of the last performed activities are not positive/satisfying.

The project name does not need to be mentioned, only "Project AA", "Project BB", etc. would be sufficient.

I think that many members would be able to accept longer waiting time for new project, as long as they know that some works do really happen.

Cheers,
Yves

Re: NEW Projects?

Greetings to all,
Folks, FAH has unleashed gazellions of WU's after Exp 41... according to Sekerobs progress charts there are more than 1700 days of work to be done for FAH! please pay attention, this is based on last 7 days of performance.( FAH is assigned nearly all the power of WCG!!! ) IF no new project comes or no new experiments prepared by FAH, we are 5 years away from finishing current workload.... before new projects arrive we have to clean up the pipe for FAH as far as we can..
Just my 2 cents....

Re: NEW Projects?

To decrypt for Safak, FAH is the Grid world reference to FoldingAtHome [and they're running on BOINC]. FAAH is the acronym for FightAIDSAtHome and to expand on that if you see FAAH on a task it's the FAAH using the AutoDock application engine and when seeing FAHV it's the FAAH using the AutoDock VINA application engine.

As for projected days left, there's 2 estimates, one if there's no volume information [impossible in fact for FAAH for various reasons], so an estimated end date is set [5 years drawn from the HIVE grand made a number of months ago] and the reference 'Calendar' is entered as base, and 'Volume', if there is a quasi volume estimate [HFCC we have e.g. a quite exact estimate per target]. Either is to be taken very loosely, but to sum it up, it does not matter how hard we crunch, the experiments themselves, for FAAH, will complete faster, but the research will continue... more experiments, or hiatus if the scientists think they need do determine the 'what's next'. Will not bet you, but WCG hosters will get very nervous if FAAH would go on pause... tired

Re: NEW Projects?

I respect the clarification. Thanks Alan & Rob.
All I was trying to say is, Until new projects arrive FAAH or FAHV has a window of opportunity to utilise full power of the grid. After seeing the status page of the project, it's not hard to guess AIDS scientists will keep our CPU's hot for a looong while :)
no matter what..

Interesting. Could you, please, post the source of this finding? Because, according to BOINCstats, the number of active crunchers in last 60 days increased from 65 000 to 72 000 (+11%). As well as the number of active hosts (from circa 215 K to circa 255 K).

ETA: new Alpha testing started? silly
