Here is another sampling of performance data for the graphics cards. They are ordered in increasing order by the average elapsed time.

** Original List ** Here is the list of top GPU cards that have had returned results returned by at least 3 different users. Elapsed Time Graphics Card [Edit 1 times, last edit by knreed at Oct 18, 2012 12:42:13 AM] |

Many thanks for this, A question I have been asked over 20 times at XS in the past three days is this: How long will WCG be using GPU?
----------------------------------------Will it fade after HCC? Is it something that will be used on the other projects? The boy's are getting their wallets out and we're planning a group buy of over 100 cards BUT people want some assurance that they aren't wasting their money if this is only a short term event. I said no it isn't but who listens to me. |

Well, at the time of this posting, there hasn't been any GPU Beta projects for other projects, so I would think after this project ends, which will be alot sooner than before, we might have another period of waiting for new GPU units, but hopefully new Projects will be released with native GPU support.

It's a good impression, however one has to consider that for this project the speed of the CPU supporting its GPU has a big influence on the elapsed time too. |

I can reproduce this list with two columns if folks think it would be useful. Column 1: average elapsed time Column 2: average(elapsed_time - cpu_time) Let me know. |

@Movieman
We are still assessing the impact of the acceleration on the end date of the HCC1 project. Our rough estimate with 'known' work based on this acceleration is about 100-130 days until end of project. BUT my use of the word 'known' simply means the number of batches we are aware to run. What we are are is not equal to what the researchers want to run so we are discussing this further with them at this time. However, we do not yet have any research project beyond HCC1 that we know can run on a GPU. While this has definitely shown the power of GPU working well, for an application that clearly fits the profile of being suitable for GPU, the researchers are still the ones that provide the code and they will have to determine if GPU would work for their project and then make the modifications. It is important to us to have GPU capable projects, but we cannot promise them. Even then, we could find ourselves with a project that was written for CUDA and not be able to run on AMD graphics cards (or written for AMD but not CUDA). As a result, we ask that people not make purchasing decision without understand these caveats. |

BUT how could anyone make an informed decision on what to buy without knowing whether the project people are coding for AMD or for CUDA? Just my 2 cents but might it not be wise to send a email to all these people involved and get them to decide on one or the other? Sometimes a leader has to actually lead my friend. To steer people in the direction wanted and I don't care which even though I think the AMD direction is the better choice. |

Just to make it easy, how about this:
----------------------------------------Dear Project Developer, We have just started rolling out GPU WU for the HCC project and the response has been overwhelming to say the least and it is growing. The effect of this GPU based work will cut years if not decades off of the time needed to complete the projects and save lives. Now to get the best effect out of the GPU's we've decided that all GPU work will be done using ( insert CUDA or Open GL here) coding so please keep that in mind when you make your decisions. Sincerly, The WCG Staff Short,sweet and to the point. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Movieman at Oct 17, 2012 12:00:04 AM] |

Instead of imposing the choose your side statement Movieman, just note the developers (researchers) of the overwhelming power already seen and possibly even break it down by what GPU's were observed. Some scientists may find one brand more to their liking. One example is GPUGrid.net using primarily nVidia for their research. There is a reason they sometimes choose a side. Right now GPU processing has 3 basic sides. CUDA, CAL, or OpenCL.

Do you have a record of the fastest elapsed time?
