Re: It's as bad as the beta

Thanks for the replies.

I was just confirming that the display lag cannot be further adjusted/fixed within the application itself.
I'll admit that I missed where knreed stated "the HCC1 guys have reduced the amount of work for each kernel to as short of time as possible"

I'm well aware of the workarounds.
I manually suspend WCG tasks so that my GPU can work on Poem@Home tasks and GPUGrid.net tasks while I am active, and then before I leave, I resume the WCG tasks.
It's a major pain.

But, I'll try to get used to my new workaround routine.

Re: It's as bad as the beta

I have been using Folding @ Home GPU for several years without it affecting the User Interface. (I also run 6 WCG tasks on my cpus) Maybe the WCG programmers should ask FAH how they solved the problem. The only option I see in WCG preferences to limit screen lag is to stop running the app when the computer is in use. The other option of adding the app_info file to the WCG folder means you can't run regular cpu wcg tasks. That isn't much of a solution.

Well, every time I've tried FAH on GPU it's interfered with using the computer...

Re: It's as bad as the beta

I don't do FAH (PG) GPU any more because of what they are working on (ie.. reseach projects) but if that's your thing, I never had a lag issue there AND gamed while folding. I had High end GPU and CPU and MOBO. Never missed a beat. If you aren't bleeding edge with your equip please don't blame any project for not being able to MAX your contributions as others are.
That being said.... Push what you have as far as you can. Be happy that you are doing something you don't have to... for no personal reward... and whatever you can do is every bit as important and appreciated because you are chosing to do it... and you don't have to :)

Re: It's as bad as the beta

On another note, I have another computer running 2X GTX570s on 990X@4.3, 6G Ram, evga Classy MOBO, XP 64bit. Using 11 cores. Other 9 are WCG projects and have 0 (zero) lag, at least I don't notice. It is dedicated cruncher and rarely used, but I have gamed WOW without shutting down GPU crunching.
That being said.... My other machine 980X@3.9, W7 64bit, GTX460 and GTX465, 10 cores with WCG projects filling other 8 is mostly useless due to lag. Other system specs are similar.
I think a lot of the lag issues are GPU related and not the project.

Guys still sharing your pain

7.05 has improved matters I can now manage to reach the reply to the post button without the efforts of what feels like a man who has drunk a whole bottle of whisky.
If whatever they have done in 7.05 could keep going then I might one day be able to use Media Centre to watch TV again without selecting use GPU never if resuming GPUGrid fails to start one of theirs running

Dave

Have you considered picking up a very cheap second card that is not compute capable to run your monitor while the 560 crunches?

Excellent idea nanoprobe. Did not think at all about that. But how do you assign one card to crunching and one to video.
Let say I have one GTX580 for crunching and one GTS520 for display.
How would you do the assignment in the Win7 environment?

Let say I have one GTX580 for crunching and one GTS520 for display.
How would you do the assignment in the Win7 environment?

You put your GTX 580 in the PCI-E slot closest to the CPU socket and the GTS 520 in the next slot. The 580 should be assigned as GPU 0 and the 520 should be assigned as GPU 1. Find the cc_config.xml file in the BOINC folder and add this line of code.
<exclude_gpu>1</exclude_gpu>

If you don't have a cc_config. xml file in the BOINC folder copy and paste this into notepad and save it as cc_config.xml and place it into the BOINC folder.

<cc_config>
<options>
<exclude_gpu>1</exclude_gpu>
</options>
</cc_config>

You'll need to shut down boinc and restart it for the changes to take effect. The 520 should now be for your display while the 580 crunches.

Boinc sometimes does weird things like not see both cards when inserted at the same time so you may have to put the 580 in first, let boinc recognize it, shut down your computer, put in the 520 and then reboot. It may also not assign 0 or 1 to the GPUs as described. If you see a message in the event log that says your card is not capable of running the tasks then it assigned them opposite of the way I first described it. Just shut down boinc and change the number in the exclude tag from 1 to 0.
Hope I haven't totally confused you but I wanted to give you all possible scenarios to get what you want done.
Let me know how it goes.
